only reason i ask is that the e28 has sensors on the auto box and the e30 does not ?

they're for the early motronic system used on the 525e
you're transferring a 525e engine to an e30 right?
if so, and you want to use the 525e loom and ecu, then you do need a box with the sensors. however your e30 box might have plugged holes for the sensors already drilled in it.
no idea if the 525e box will go in the e30 though

My car is an auto. I kept the auto box, then I just swapped all the bits over, such as waterpump, wiring, manifolds and sensors to the new engine.
As for Mega Squirt, Ant says it won't work on auto's

It may work but the motronic ECU tells the gearbox when a shift is required.
possibly be able to use a spare output from the MS ecu to trigger the box though, not looked into it much as mines a stick shift

The auto box from a 525e is a ZF 4HP22 non switchable, Mine was and it's now destined for a diesel landrover
I'm pretty sure that the E30 uses a 4HP22 on the 6 cylinder cars and that the switchable was on late 325i's.
