While still in the midst of my 2.8 build, I have decided

that while the old lump is still sat in the car now would be a good time to do the Engine management upgrade.
Luckily enough for me,Sanchez today posted a link, in a totally
unrelated thread, which show s me where this part should be located.

Image

http://bmwfans.info/parts/catalog/E30/T ... pper_part/

If i've got this right, this part Image
should be located somewhere down around here.

http://bmwfans.info/parts/catalog/E30/T ... on_damper/

Am i correct in thinking that i only need to replace part No 2,
and not part No1 itself?
Will be taking copious amounts of photos, and needing copious amounts of help, but hopefully when finished this can all be
cleaned up and used as a guide to others.
TIA.

If you are converting from motronic 1.1 - 1.3 there is a lot more to it then just one part.

The part in the first pic is the crank position sensor and it sits at the bottom of the engine just near where the A/C compressor is.... If looking from the front of the car its bottom left.

I have no idea what the part is in the second pic you posted.. It looks like a crank position sensor however the plug is wrong... The plug is a 3 wire plug not that multi plug thing on your 2nd pic.

You need part # 8 in the link provided....

This is what you need..

Facelift loom with injector loom
Facelift ECU
Facelift AFM
Facelift oil level sensor
No 6 lead with cylinder ID sensor
ICV
Crank sensor & bracket with 10mm bolt
Toothed timing wheel
Diagnostic plug bracket
Bracket that runs beneath the throttle body that holds the injector loom plug c191
High impedance injectors

Thats the list, apparently your old injectors will work.... That is everything I replaced on mine

No idea what that second thing is Rob, had nothing like that on mine.

I never changed my injectors though, car runs but hasn't been driven so i hope they are ok as i've had them refurbed by Injectortune.

Want me to get you some pics of mine in the next few days? It's any easy enough job, mainly just a case of direct swaps. I can e-mail you a guide for the wiring you need to do, only 2 or 3 wires.

I was meant to do a guide as well but did my normal routine of putting everything together and forgetting to take any pics.

Even the wiring isn't hard so long as you're not colour blind

Many thanks Mike, Dave.

Mike,
" If you are converting from motronic 1.1 - 1.3 there is a lot more to it then just one part.'

give me some credit mate. "Will be taking copious amounts of photos, and needing copious amounts of help,"
Even I could change one part ,without needing to employ the word "copious" :)

I have all the below, except the Facelift AFM.

" This is what you need.."

Facelift loom with injector loom
Facelift ECU
Facelift AFM
Facelift oil level sensor
No 6 lead with cylinder ID sensor
ICV
Crank sensor & bracket with 10mm bolt
Toothed timing wheel
Diagnostic plug bracket
Bracket that runs beneath the throttle body that holds the injector loom plug c191
High impedance injectors

Will be using the injectors from my preface lift, for now at least. :thumb:

1.1 = 2 rows of pins on the ecu
1.3 = 3 rows of pins on the ecu

I'm told you do need the facelift AFM, mine runs on the old one but don't know how it'd drive.

Not true!

Same part numbers for both.

I converted an '85 325i to motronic 1.3 and retained the original AFM, it runs perfect and the cars done over 10k since.

It belongs to SteSE on here.

How about the ICV :?:
May have this wrong but i;m pretty sure someone on here has kept
the earlier one on their conversion.

AFAIK, the only difference between 325i ICV's are if they are L or T shaped and there for need the matching throttle intake boot.

I'm pretty sure i retained the original on SteSE's conversion.

Can I use all the bits from a m20 320, except the ECU. Would be handy as I have a 320.

Hope so, Boyo, as that's exactly the model my bits and loom
came from.
Believe you can also gave the 320 ECU chipped so it's
possible to use.

To clear things up a little....

My car would refuse to run on the pre facelift AFM, swapped to a facelift one and bang she started...

From memory there is a difference between the ICVs and I think its the pre facelift had a 2 prong connector and the facelift had a 3 prong connector....

Absolutely you can... Thats exactly what I have used.

Tomorrow I will clear all this up and check out all my old parts ect ect.. Go through all the pics and makes sure what I wrote above about the ICV is fact... Give me 24 hours. :D

ICV is the same depending on T or L shaped,
AFM is the same facelift or pre-face unless you use a very early pre C101 plug (metal Air filter housing )

differences on the loom are..

Throttle body plug (tps) is different on auto's compared with manual
early starter motors only have 3 wires compared with 4 on later models fitted with 1.3
oil pressure switch is a single spade connector on early cars,

very early cars have this type of plug instead of the C101 used on 1986 onwards,

here's the 1986 onwards type of C101

Which E30 model did your car start out as? If it was a 320i or 323i then it would have had Bosch LE jetronic not Bosch Motronic 1.1 hence why you engine would not run on the original AFM as it is a different part.
e30topless wrote:very early cars have this type of plug instead of the C101 used on 1986 onwards,
September '85 build date onward uses the C101, all 325i's have a C101.

I'm guessing the car you did was that Hartge H23 which was a 323i base car with LE jetronic hence the lack of C101?

To clear things up a little for the OP with a 325i with Bosch Motronic 1.1 there is no need to change the AFM, Injectors, ICV, body loom etc.

Its a 86 325e with distributer on the front of the head not LE jetronic.

Here are some real clear pics of the original engine with original wiring.

Notice the very small diagnostic plug socket near the dipstick.. ANd the C101 has only a handful of wires in it just like topless has pictured in his.

That will explain it then, the eta engine has a different AFM to the 325i.

I think if there is going to be a write up for the wiki then all these differences need to be covered depending on the car you are starting with.

Obviously a 325i is the easiest to convert.
