i have one of those converters that allows you to power 240v items from a 12v supply.

thing is, is it looks a bit messy with the wire out from the lighter output. can i wire it directly to the battery or am i mental?

(go easy with the mental jokes pleze  )

yep, you can... most of the inverters come with crocodile clips that allow you to plug straight to the battery.

the inverter has its own fuse etc so no need for inline fuse etc.

All sorts of properly fused supplies are available at the accessories socket at the back of the glove box.
Socket Z (In the corner next to the four pin radio plug) is a permanent 12V supply (same one that feeds the cig lighter)
