Checking to see does engine run and if it's good

I bought my engine of a guy who I trust and really have no reason to not expect it to run. However, I'd like to have some certainty that it is a good running engine before I spend hrs cleaning it, servicing, fitting new parts etc etc only to find out it's rubish. I don't want to just fit it either asis as something will go wrong and I'll never end up cleaning it up if it's been fitted and I dont want a dirty engine sitting in a freshly sprayed engine bay.

Curently the engine and box are sitting in the engine bay of the scrapper. No clutch or flywheel just a few bolts in the crank to stop oil pooring out when lifting it into the bay.

If you bolted a flywheel to it would it start? ie is the loom still connected etc....

The loom is curently over with Dan getting modified.

Is there a easy way to get the box of without lifting the engine out? I don't have access to a engine hoist anymore

The only test you could do without actually running the engine is a compression test, but you would need a flywheel/starter and gearbox fitted, just power the starter with a compression gauge fitted to each cylinder

Any tips to removing the gearbox insitu so I can get the flywheel bolted up.

doing a compression test on the ground is possible again stick a flywheel and gearbox on and connect the starter direct to a battery

just have the engine sitting secure

My old man used to get engines running on the garage floor but with all the electrics on newer stuff this would be more complicated to do.

You can hire a hoist from about £35 a day, not saying it's cheap but it's an option!
