So, long time reader of the forums and thought I’d add a bit about the Mondeo i bought to replace the missus Fiesta.
I got this car as an ex company pool car from the company I work for. It was originally bought for manager before he upgraded and it became a pool car an came up for auction last year with a few problems, mainly a bonnet that was found to be stuck shut when the car went to be valleted before the auction and the fact that the windscreen had a chip in it.
Anyway I had a quick look on the TalkFord the bonnet problem in and found it was pretty common and an easy free fix most times so i through a bid in and got it for £2200
Quite pleased with it 06 plate 110k but all motorway, every service stamp but was due a service soon.

As i got it
Image
Rang ford to ask about the price of a service to keep the stamps up but after asking what they actually did for the £225 they wanted to charge me I decided we would probably keep the car for long enough that a missing stamp wouldn’t really be a major problem.
Ford would only do the air filter, oil filter, pollen filter and oil. Now i’ve always serviced my own cars and this is the newest car I’ve owned but I thought they would do more than that on a service.
So I ordered a load of parts from Opie Oils and got on with replacing/changing the below
Engine Oil
Oil filter
Air filter which was very dirty
Pollen filter
PAS oil
Anti freeze
Clutch/Brake fluid
Gearbox oil (Drain plugs is a daft place on the 6 speeders)
Grease Gear change cables
And then all the usual checks

Filthy air filter

Also managed get a few bit sorted on it to smarten it up a bit and make it better for the missus job which at the time was working as nurse in the community so I added a parrot hands free as she’s always on the phone at work and had one in the old festa, also rubbed down the front and back rubbing strips and painted them silver to match.

Not got a picture but when I got the car my grandma said she had a boot liner for an old Mondeo in her garage, so I went to have a look at and was well pleased with what she had. It was a full boot and back seat liner (for when the back seats are folded down) but for a MK2 Mondeo. Anyway a quick chop chop with the jigsaw and a bit of ”aU”a trim got me sorted with a full fibre glass boot liner that fits the Mk3 perfectly. Finally I bought a genuine Ford dog guard as we had just got a Labrador (Cheaper than kids)
Also replaced all the interior lights with 6000k 3w LED bulbs and swopped the 501 puddle lights for 9x6000k 3W LED panels in each side.
So smoked about in it for a bit literally before I got fed up with the smoke and went to look at the common problem of the EGR blocking up and pleased i did as it was well blocked, must have been all them motorway miles on part throttle.

With the above all cleaned out the low end torque of the car was improved no end not to mention another 5mpg
Few month ago a wanted to get some better wheels for the car so won some tit-x rims on ebay and went to pick them up in the dark and came away with what looked like 4x18”a diamond cut rims
Nice
Image
Not so nice
Image
But what i got was 2 good ones and 2 welded ones, although all 4 had good tyres on so i took them off and sold the rims on ebay for nearly the same money (welds declared) and bought some 18”a anthracite wheels off a Focus with diamond cut centre caps.
How the car looks now on the new wheels.

Very nice wagon. I like these turds - had my 52 Plate TDCI 130 Zetec Hatchback for over a Year now but its not as tidy as yours !

They seem to respond very well to a service - mine was much better after changing the fuel filter both in terms of power and MPG although I still cant get more than 45mpg out of it no matter how I drive it :x

I had the same EGR issues but after cleaning it out I blanked it off - I don't think you can do it on yours without putting the light on the dash though as the later ones are electronically controlled

Try also cleaning the MAF sensor ( be careful ) with electrical contact cleaner ( NOT carb cleaner ) and cotton buds - will also help with MPG and throttle response

Hi rob have a seen you posting over on Talk ford?/

45 MPG seams to be quite good, i got 47mpg driving on a run on country roads and it went up to 50mpg on a long run on the motorway. when i got the car the trip computer had probably never been used and was showing a average of 53mpg although this is probably due to the large number of motorway miles the car did before i got it.

It does 43mpg round town all day long though.

Good tip on the MAF but i bought a new one just to make sure it was running as good as it could but it didnt make it any beter or worse so i have a spare to put on ebay at some point.

Also have now got a set of Pirelli Sottozeros on the old 16" rims ready for the white stuff.

And a few pics of the new puddle lights with the LED pannels fitted

45mpg is about the best I can get - cost me £84 to fill up on Monday - managed to get over 60 litres in the alledged 58.5 litre tank  I think the most I've ever managed to get out of a full tank is 600 miles.

I'm on Talkford too but don't go on there much now as I've managed to sort most of the niggles my turd had now. :D

I did take the manifold off and it was realy bad inside although it was supprisi.ngly good in the head.

Think i might try blocking it off, loads of people seam to have done done it with no problems and got better mpg although still in the back of my mind I know Ford put it there for a reason....

I tried to get more than 45 mpg from the 11 plate CDTi Insignia I've been driving, but can't. It's the 160 bhp SRi but even so, the 320d will do about 5-8 mpg more with ease and they're 170+ bhp depending on year.

Good call on the Mondy though - that's a lot ofcar for bugger all. It certainly makes you question the £6-7000 an A4 2.0TDi Avant would cost of the same year.

You can do an EGR bypass no problem. It's only there for some Gay emissions reason and it's worth blocking it off with a proper bypass kit. Ford put it on there for a reason - they had to, for emissions. On the old 525tds you used to block off the feed pipe with a penny coin!

I'm sure on the facelift car ( which yours is ) you can't block off the EGR without it putting the engine management light on.

On the earlier cars the EGR valve is purely mechanical so you can block it with no ill effects
On yours it has a black electrical plug/sensor on the end which you can just see on the far left of the EGR in this pic :
Image
Which will sense the blockage, log a fault code and put the light on on the dash :x .

Apparently on these you can put a blanking plate in with a small hole drilled in it which is just enough to let some gases through the valve to fool the sensor but its a bit of a bodge :(

Think I got mine from this guy :

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FORD-MONDEO-M ... 1e681be034

If you can cut metal you could make one yourself

EDIT **just read the ebay listing - explains all :D **
