I've got a bit of a derv crush at the moment, can't beat that proper low down shove from absolutely no revs, although the narrow power band is a bit gash.
Anyway, I'm seriously considering either of the above although am more swayed to the E39 530d.
Money seems to go further with the E39 for the purchase price although typically for an older car.
Scott on here has a E39 530d manual with leather and other trimmings which I'm going to take a peek at sometime. He's had good service out of it and has spent a few bob on it.
If you were going to punt a couple of bags on a BMW oil burner, what would you pick?

There is a reason why E39's are cheap!
Id be buying an E46 touring TBH, although it would be petrol!

Neither. The whole point of a diesel is much cheapness per mile, an old 3.0 does not deliver enough of a margin over a petrol turd to be worth living with a ticking bomb.

had my 108k 2 owner 02 530d m sport for quite a while now, i average easy 45mpg (done by fuel going in, rather then trip computor), nice looking car, comfy, all the bits on it, and for £4000 I dont think i could have found much else that matches it.
Couldnt find a decent m sport 330d for under £7500, would have loved one but just to pricy

I'd sooner have an SE spec model like this http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-530D-SE-E ... 3a6ca19978
rather than paying for Msport versions with a bit of bling and rubber band tyres etc

At least a manual 530d doesn't have swirl flaps or a £2000 autobox - they're also better on fuel. If you want one, buy Scott's. Be aware that they're all old enough to need a turbo, injectors, high pressure pump etc. Don't even think about chipping it. The actual M57 engine is very strong - it's the Bosch bits fitted to it that are a bit crap.

If you want something to waft about in with better fuel economy then get something similar to this.
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2001-BMW-540i ... 43ab0ee5e4
Or get a 330i and run that on gas.

Hmmm. Who reconned the engine and gearbox - and why? Old V8 BMW's are just a world of pain, cooling system issues, water cooled alternators and crap like that. Lovely when they're working, but..
If it were a cheap to run derv, I'd be going VAG. A manual A6 2.5TDI Avant is the weapon of choice.

Im not sure if they use the same injectors but the VAG 2.0TDI' injectors are £400 a pop and they do go wrong.Andyboy wrote:If it were a cheap to run derv, I'd be going VAG. A manual A6 2.5TDI Avant is the weapon of choice.
BMW M47/57 injectors are half that.

The gaffa wants me to look at the allroad because of the school trip roads. I cant see the point of four wheel drive just for three weeks of bad weather last year!Andyboy wrote:Hmmm. No, the 2.0TDi is a whole new ball game. The 2.5TDi goes back to the middle to late 1990's and they're very good engine.bss325i wrote:Im not sure if they use the same injectors but the VAG 2.0TDI' injectors are £400 a pop and they do go wrong.Andyboy wrote:If it were a cheap to run derv, I'd be going VAG. Lee - if you want a diesel chariot, Scotts 530d is the one to have. The fact that Scott is going to blow me into the middle of next week if the sale goes through has nothing to do with it.

for 2 bags, Petes' Passat is the way, mpg and depreciation sewn up. You've really gotta dig the td bubble to warrant a 530 / 330.

How Fuel effecient are the the 3 litre diesels? A guy in work had a 330D and said it wasn't that good, that said it does go like stink!E30BeemerLad wrote:I don't really want to spend more than 2 bags.Andy325i wrote:How about an E46 320D? I was well impressed with how well they go!

Mike's 320D e46 would get 700 miles to a tank
I've been thinking about a Mk4 golf Tdi myself actually, but like the idea of running veggie oil at 95P a litre as I do Bristol - Plymouth - Bristol every week
I can't see you lowering yourself to a French POS
That said I its not bad at all for me, 600 miles to a tank, in relative comfort and its paid for itself about 19 times over now and is worth nothing so depreciation is zero and its galvanised and parts are popular and normally pence
you know you want one

530D for me Lee, E46's are horrid turds..
Scotts is a great car he's looked after it and I might have a pop at it if you don't
SOMEONE managed to destroy a 530D M sport Donk after 4 wheel diffin the barge on a roundabout at 110MPH,
I have never asked him for a lift since.. I was suprised how quick the turd was

I was offered a high miles e46 320d msport with alcantara interior, de-swirled and long t&t for £2200.. They're solid, and if you can ignore some of the lesser quality traits and get on with it, depreciation has flatlined..
In the real world the 330 is a much faster car, but it chins through juice - there's a much more satisfying return knowing that you're doing up to date mpg at a fraction of the cost

my missus uses it daily doing 15ish miles a day and a tank will last 2 weeks thats with a few other trips and me using it once or twice and ive got a heavy foot
but i did get a low mile fsh car and paid a decent amount.....
