Just did the calculations and I've been getting around 20-22.

Is this normal?

Depends how you drive, where you drive and engine size and condition.
mine on quite hilly roads with stop start traffic without thinking about fuel economy hits around 25-28mpg but obviously if you thrash a 325 that is rich as fook, it's not going to get any where as near as my 318 that doesn't see the pedal to the floor.

Nope. You should be getting a lot better than that from motorway driving - on a run you should be getting high 30s. I used to get 35mpg from my old M40 316i and the M42 is typically a few mpg better.

Mine was comfortably into the 30s cruising at 70-80 MPH.

Hmm this is what I thought. I'll see how it does after a service and tune up. I think it's running a tad rich which may be part of the problem!

Surely the only reason to suffer a wheezy thrashy IS is the miserly fuel consumption ? My 840 gets better mpg than that !

The most I've ever had from mine(318Ti Compact) tank to tank is 42 mpg - 70 mpg motorway cruise and pottering around the Highlands. Normally get about 35-36 average.

im getting around 23 in a 316i, about 27 on the freeway, just check your plugs to see if its running rich,

As said previously it is running rish - was a temporary fix that I need to resolve, but it shouldn't be losing me 10mpg surely?

Temp sits just below half way on the gauge
