I need a new steering rack, amongst many other things, so was thinking of getting a manual instead of power for a 325i cab, would a manual be compatible with existing? and am I being silly not paying the extra for the power.
cheers.

AFAIK, the Z3 rack has the same ratio as the E36. It has less turns lock to lock because the lock is restricted on the Z3, presumably because of tyre rubbing problems.

Thanks for clearing that up Brian I must admit I'd heard o hear a while ago about the ratio thing but you seem pretty clued up so i'll trust ya

So do this mean that the Z3 has a poor turning circle when compared to an E36 if the lock is restricted? :?

Don't take it as gospel. I've never set eyes on a Z3 rack. Just repeating what I've read elsewhere.
