err.. started to notice a strange chirping noise when my engine is cold. ive tried the following things:
fan belt
alternator
fan clutch
its a regular chirp chirp chirp noise that occurs only when the engine is cold, and at idle. as soon as you floor it, it goes away, but comes back when idling again! ANY IDEAS WELCOME!!!
cheers lads (and ladettes)

p.s. its a 320i (so straight 6 m20 engine)

Hi
i had this last week. I changed the belts when i did my pump then a chirp at idle but nothing when moving.

What i did was checked that the belts were on the right pulleys then re adjusted the tension to both belts. this made it alot better but still there very quite and not as often as before. mine turned out to be a bent alternator adjusting arm and worn bushes on the alternator mounting point so pinched them off my touring and now there is no noise

Hope this helps

yeah i have tp admit to running the engine for a few seconds without the alternator belt attached to make sure it wasnt the alterantoe or the fan or water pump atc, and it still made the noise.. ive got a new timing belt, so that the nxt job.. far too cold to be doing that kinda thing at the mo!
