Hi all
Hope you can help me... my speedo keeps cutting out infrequently but often when I come to a rest and pull away again. I find that hitting the top of the dash brings it back but at the weekend I'll look into a proper fix.
The question is are the E30 speedos all mechanical or are they electronically assisted (cos i'm thinking it may be a loose wire) any help appreciated guys.
Thanks

E30 speedo is all electronic, and works off a sensor on the back of the diff.
Usuall cause of intermittent speedo is an INTERNAL break in one of the two wires from the diff, just outside of the plug. Pull the wires gently, and see if one stretches easily.
This fits in with it happening as you stop or pull away, but not with your dash hitting cure.

Sounds exaclty the same as mine was.
I had to take the cluster out, dismantle it and then re-solder all the contacts in there.
Seemed on mine that braking caused the speedo to stop working, and full bore accelerating made it work again so something was flapping back and forth in there letting a dry joint make and break contact.

Ermmm.....trying to remmember.......
Start of by taking of the panel under the dash (if fitted). Then you need to located the large thumb screws that hold on the panel below the dash, these are behind the dash. then unscrew the screws up in the top of the binnical and down in the corners, then, i think that should be it. it can be a squeeze to get it out, you have to disconect the plugs on the rear of the clocks as you are getting it out.

Mate.. I just did this to mine. Found out it already had it done before. What it was the actual rubber plug end, where the wire joins broke off in my hand. My fog lights don't work, so I cut them and bodged them up to fit! All works well, and very happy now. Though now, I can actually work out my fuel consumption, im at the 1/4-1/2 mark with only 80kms!!
