How do I know when the brake discs need replacing?

Need technical Q/A then you're in the right place

The brake pads on my 318is need replacing - I wondered whether it's worth replacing the discs while I'm at it. The existing ones aren't scored, but there's quite a lot of wear - feels like a mm or two. It would certainly look better with some ATE power discs on the front, but not sure it's worth the expense of replacing all round... what do you think?

My normal rule with breaks is this. If it looks like it needs replacing, or makes you think about replacing it, DO IT.

If you prefer to change them for peace of mind then do it mate, but if there's that much wear on there, they should have already been replaced before now :D

The minimum thickness of the disc is embossed in the outer edge.
Think it's 10.7mm for solid discs and 20.0mm for vented discs.
Having said that, if in doubt, replace. OE ones are cheap enough, and your new pads will bed in quicker and last longer.
