Done a engine swap an
Kept the same ecu from the 320i made the engine pick up good then tryed the 325i ecu an the pick up dropped will it be still ok to use the 320i ecu in the 325i engine
ecu help
Moderator: martauto
yea, either will run either.
172/381 are the same ECU as the 173/380 just with a different chip inside.

Swap the chips over in the ECU, you need the 2.5 chip to make it run right.

felt so proud, even tried it with a E30 325i and got put in my place..
fuelling and ignition between the 2 chips is fairly similar, however, depending on the actual chip for each ECU there are some variations. on the late motronic 1.3 ECU's for the M20 (320i or 325i) there are about 4 seperate sets of ignition and fuel maps and depending on the particular chip the ECU may use one set or may use another. regardless of which set of maps the ECU uses it will run fine on the engine the chip/ECU is intended for. also plenty of people have run 320i ECU in 325i and vice versa without issues. may not be ideal but the low compression late engines can run a fairly broad AFR range before any problems arise like bucking, hesitation, power loss, etc, etc.
wouldnt be enough of a variation between 320i and 325i to warrant any concern tho.
what i suspect u have found is a 320i ECU with a chip that runs one of the slightly more agressive map sets and the 325i ECU has a chip that runs the weaker map sets. for someone like me i can just go into the code of the file and find what i dub the "map pointers" which tell the ECU which maps to use and i can change them to direct the ECU to any of the 4 sets of maps in the standard chip file. spec class E30 racers in the USA have long known about a difference in the same ECU's and as they are limited to a standard ECU they often buy a load of standard ECU's and run them on a dyno to find which one makes the most power or in tuner terms, which ECU runs the more agressive map set.
if u think the difference u found is something to shout about u should try one of my aggro chips, have not found a chip by any other tuner or brand that can oust mine on a standard-ish B25 and i have bought/tried quite a few including some massive name brands with massive price tags too..
