HI THERE, IM NEW HERE AND ALSO QUITE NEW TO THE BMW SCENE. I WAS BROUGHT UP AROUND FORDS, COSWORTHS, MK2s ETC BUT I BOUGHT A E39 M5 LAST YEAR AND LOVED IT, THEN A E36 M3 AND NOW FINALLY THE E30 IN QUESTION.....
SO WITH THE INTRO OVER WITH, THIS IS WHATS HAPPENED...
I JUST GOT THE CAR FINISHED AND READY TO SELL ON EBAY, THEN MADE THE MISTAKE OF TAKING A CHAPS WORD HE WAS HAVING IT AND MADE A 200 MILE TRIP TO SEE HIM, GOT MESSED AROUND THEN HAD TO DRIVE 200 MORE MILES BACK. GOT JUST OUTSIDE MY TOWN AND SHE DECIDED TO DUMP HER OIL, THE CAR RAN DRY AND BLEW THE BOTTOM END.......ACE!
SO, IM NEEDING AN ENGINE, AND WANT SOMTHING RELITIVLEY STRAIGHT FORWARD, SO PARTS THAT CAN BE BOUGHT OFF THE SHELF ETC ETC WITH AS LITTLE COSTOM PARTS AS POSSIBLE. IF SOMEBODY CAN POINT ME IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION THAT WOULD BE GREAT! I HEARD YOU CAN FIT THE M3 ENGINE FROM AN E36WITH OUT TOO MUCH HASSLE. ANY LINKS TO A HOW TOO GUID OR ANYTHING REALY SO I CAN CRACK ON! THANKS IN ADVANCE!

To get an E36 M3 engine in will cost you circa 6K.

What engine is in there now?

sorry, its because i stressed with this car at the mo! getting the engine isnt the problem as i know somebody who has one cheep. my boss has banned my car from his workshop (he calls it a mechanical arse hole) so doin this on my drive so carnt be making custom parts etc....any ideas?

Your cheapest route to a decent increase in power is to go 24v, but you'll spend 1k doing it and it won't happen over a weekend.

If you're short on time or cash then chuck another M20 in there

S50 swap and straight forward with no custom parts aint happening.. Lots of pennies to do also.

What engine was in there? M52 would do a job..

yeah got a fair few pics but dont know how to put them on :? sorry but i dont realy know what an m50 or any jargon for the engines are as im a newbie on the bmw scene. was thinking about the cossie lump but think bmw should stay bmw and ford should stay ford, plus the cost of just a lump these days is staggering and everyone knows just how unreliable they are.can anyone help on gettin the pics on here?

Getting there with getting pics up but still gotta click the links above, never mind! Anyways things are coming together now, bought an e36 3.0 m3 engine, box, loom, ecu, ex manifold and eng mounts etc thats all been converted to run in an e30, so no playing round with chipped keys! will need to put big end shells in the motor but for £500 who can argue!!!
will get some pics of the engine up asap! should be a nice car when shes done

that was the next task! lol he thought the top end was ticking (it was but only very slightly) and didnt like the colour!

the inlet plenum is interesting, presumably that was fabb'd upto avoid messing about relocating the brake servo & master cylinder?

Inlet plenum is shockingly bad..

It was also knocking I believe. Saw it on ebay.

yeah thats why i said it needs shell, and possibly a crank re-ground, but im not complaining for what i paid for it, if the plenum doesnt work i will find another way, its a good start......

The std plenum fits with moving the servo across.

BMW designed the volume of the plenum to work with the engine. That small square box will be a great way to lose power and torque everywhere.

I have 3 s50's with fooked bottom ends at work, Rebuild costs on these will make your eyes water :eek: It is much easier/cheaper to buy a good one in the first place.

getting slightly depressed lads! will let you know how much my wallet hurts after.......learning curve. will just get it up and running i think and worry about the plenum then. i know a lad who rebuilds bottom ends and re grinds cranks and he owes me a favour, is there a special reason that there expensive to re build?

still waiting for it to get here, think i will just replace to gaskets and freshen it up, was tempted by the "while its apart" and nearly bought some low comp pistons for a proper turbo build but resisted it! i know what you mean about the m tax, jumped the last m5 i had and bmw wanted to take my arms and legs for a sump, in the end we broke out the ally welder!!! how hard is it to move the servo? never needed to do it before?

had a look at the plenum this morn down at the yard (first day off ive had and first time ive seen it in the daylight) and the plenum looks like a pro job, thin but very deep. so thinks im going to check it against the volume of a standard one, Anyways im thankfull for the help ive got so far, i havnt exactly got cash falling out of my backside so trying not to make any costly mistakes (even tho buying one with a foooked bottom end seems to have been my first one). And it looks like ive made another one, in my haste to get this engine, as i normaly do a bit more research. the gearbox supplied looks alot more like a e30 one, apposed to an M3 one, ive looked on the build threads and they have been talks of using the e30 gearbox but with an m20 flywheel and clutch set up? any help on this matter would be grand, and sorry for my naiveity :o:

It can be done.. Custom gearbox mount required. Bent linkage also. M20 flywheel/clutch/starter. Depending on use of it, I think an uprated clutch would be in order.

WRT to the plenum. Pro job or not, it will be rubbish - Look at the shape compared to ALL BMW/aftermarket CF plenums. Buy a standard one and move the servo.

sounds like thats the way i will have to go, acc to the lad, its just been pulled out of an e30, so hopefully it will allready have the clutch flywheel etc from one, will check today.
WRT the plenum, you sound like u obv know your stuff on them so will take your advice and move the servo (checking the build threads first on how to :wink: )
