Hello, was just wandering if it is possible to lighten tbe 318is flywheel as it looks pretty chunky! Don't really want to go down the route of fitting an m20 one so was just looking to get the original one skimmed down.
Thanks

You can take a shedload off them. There is a photo of one taken more or less to the limit on an engine build thread from Rix313, mine is similar.

I took mine down to this:

I may get another one done and not take so much out of the actual walls, the chap at the machine shop got a little excited with it. I'm not sure how that would put it with having the clutch dumped during a race start but Brian will have more experience with that than me.

I dont see the point, surely an M20 will be lighter?

An M20 flywheel could possibly be lightened further (but tbh I doubt it, most of the internet comparisons of the lighter M20 flywheel are comparing it to an M42 dual mass flywheel which few if any UK M42s had), but the M20 clutch and pressure plate is a lot heavier so takes it back up again. M42 flywheel machined as above with clutch and pressure plate will be lighter overall. Mine will be coming out sometime over the next couple of months, I'll stick it on the scales for curiosity.
