driving home today i saw an e30 m3 which was 'R' reg. Is this because it could be an import, as i have never seen this before. My mate had an impoterd mr2 but the was plated from the year of manufacture, so whats the deal here?

You better keep your eyes out for it then, cos that would be the rarest E30 on the whole planet! :o

Did you happen to see what version it was (318/320...) and what colour was it!

I have a feeling that it could have been a private plate with a pre-prefix number that started with R

For example, RAR 123T

The latest I have seen is 'L' reg. on a touring....plenty of K plates on various models.

Or one which was held back and not registered for a few years?

It will be a car that wasn't registered until 98/99.

There's an 03 plate M3 Evo going around!

Maybe an import error that someone has taken advantage of? Just that although my car has the appropriate 'D' registration the V5 says the date of first reg was 1996 rather than 1986 so I guess techically I could buy anything up to a P-plate according to that even though it is just a typo...

Don't know how often this error occurs though!

As Adam said, it could just have been a car that wasn't registered until late.

There was recently an E30 Evo sport for sale in one of the BMW mags registered on a 51 plate with delivery mileage, a dealer was getting rid of some exhibits!
In the same advert there was a 8 series Alpina B12 for sale too, very rare car, also delivery mileage, registered on a 51 plate, and the asking price was 52k, less than half what it would have cost if you'd bought one when new!!

My car was imported in 1999 and the V5 says that it was first registered in that year......further down though is says it previously registered abroad - DVLA decides what registration number is issued by the information it is given - All paperwork from the previous owner, including from abroad would have to be submitted before they will allow the car to be registered.

It certainly could have been kept back by a dealer as it would have been paid for over time - Perhaps then sold onto a collector, but not through official channels and the car could have only been insured/driven without such a formal registration through trade plates - Not unheard of.

I dont buy that though because if I were the owner of such a car, I would be shouting from the roof tops and bragging about it on websites such as these.

Granted, that there are some fantastic BMW out there that are still to be registered since they were built in 1989/90, most of them are held abroad.

So if this car is genuine its present owner must have known of it in a collection and paid well over the odds for it - If it was offered to the public, then it would have been noticed in one of the trade/car magazines and if it was put up for auction, then it would have surfaced through users groups somewhere

Here is an add that some of you may recognise....

The add for the Evo Sport at Ԛ£39 has -2kms, which means it has probably never been driven on a road because its not delivery mileage.
