mmm personally I dont see the problem with rwd and snow. I had a e36 328 couple winters back when it heavily snowed and Basingstoke became the uks biggest car park, I never once got stuck, made it up all the hills the only times it was difficult was from other drivers not knowing how to drive in the conditions.

Being a manual too its pretty easy to keep control of what the driving wheels are doing, if it snows heavily I also remove the abs then I atleast have some control over the brakes too.

Although if a rwd car has an LSD then driving in the snow is a ball ache, I had a 325 e36 shortly after my 328, the 325 had a lsd fitted and the back end of the car would just follow the camber on the road no matter what inputs you put in the car would never go straight!

I've driven all manner of RWD stuff in the snow - E30's, Sierra's, Capri's ( Inc an LSD fitted 2.8i ) and never had an issue - until my E36 Touring with ASC which was pretty much undriveable in the snow a couple of years ago - to be fair I have to get up a short but steep hill to get into my road but it was just useless even with a run up - ASC on just cut the power to zero, ASC off and it just spun out.

Im all set for the snow, ive fitted an LSD to my E34 touring and have 195/65/15 mud/snow tyres ready to go onto the steelies, the hills wont beat me this year

In the snow
LSD= two wheel drive, Open diff =one wheel drive, power going to the path of least resistance. Although the comment is true about back end of the car following the road camber but that is purely because the driver is trying to put too much power down for the conditions.
Skinny winter tyres and a whiney old welded diff for me

I also had an E87 118d auto with 235 rear tyres for a week right in the snow period and again had no problem getting about.

Its all about the skillz innit!

S50 +snow on Falkens = major Fail

10 mins after this was taken I did the M62 sideways in the slush (using all 3 lanes)

Matt was very lucky I didn't bend it ...
one good reason to lock up M3's in bad weather.. my ar5e was twitching like a rabbits nose !

Round your way Kingswood/Reigate i swear there must be a micro-climate there as if there is a tiny bit of snow in London you can count on there bloody being alot there.

Did you tyres have loads of tread?

In Feb 2009 - i was enjoying driving in the snow that one night it rained as i was coming back from a date at night. However, i soon got stuck up that road which is a railway bridge near Shell garage coming onto the A4/BMW/VW Dealerships in Hounslow as i had to come to a halt as cars in front stopped so i couldnt use the momentum. I also saw a crash in front of my eyes between other cars. The hardest bit was parking on my driveway as the road not gritted and due to the nature of my road to reverse it on my driveway it had to go over the crown of the road and by that time there was maybe 3-4 inches on snow against a set of Goodyear Eagle F1 summer tyres or it just could be down to (lack of) skillz. The best bit was beating some ladies

in a compact on the A4 at night as I having never seen snow on the A4 from the lights. I turned ASC off and went. The "cool" thing was under braking the back wanted to swap round if you are not too careful.

LOL it just started snowing end of my date lol. No bareback action

though i enjoyed a little sideways action with ASC turned off and under braking preventing it swapping round.

i get in a bad way about these wagons! Although i had the pleasure of driving an e39 525i sport wagon on friday and i loved that also! no where near as slow as i thought it would be either!

Traction traction traction. LSD is great, 4x4 even better - but I've seen a Ford Ka scamper up a steep snowy hill and an Audi Q7 fail with all four spinning. I pulled an Audi Quattro out of our (level) car park last winter because he had massive summer tyres on and I was in a Jeep with M+S marked offroad tyres.
If you're on ice in a car with summer tyres you're going nowhere (and probably shouldn't try).

Adding weight to the back end is a good idea too. As the weight of the back end will help it dig more traction instead of hovering around like a fairy.

I had a good ol' Landy Defender last winter. That certanly gets your arse twitching sitting that high up sliding sideways on a bit of ice. No matter how good farmer ted tells you how they are in the winter they will slide for fun on a bit of ice but by god was it fun smashing through walls of snow.

yeah i am local well i live in West London not Heathrow.

I was having fun in the 323Ci that night when it started snowing till it took me a good 10minutes trying to reverse over the crown of my road and park on the driveway when there was trainer/ankle deep snow and only Goodyear Eagle F1 tyres all round which were under 6 months old and that uphill part i mentioned near Syon Lane.

i can imagine that road being a pig to go up in the snow , plus you have that bend which every one drives through too quickly so in snow that means accidents!

yeah i checked some days ago it is near syon lane but it is not called syon lane. it is the road that crosses the A4 at Gilette corner going northbough with a left hand turn in it from light to lights (at A4) including one zebra crossing and one train station. I was going towards Gillette corner that one time it snowed.
