Problem discovered, there's nowt wrong with the guibo I fitted a month ago. So this caused some head scratching, so I removed the exhaust and heat sheild thinking it could be the centre bearing (although that was brand new when I built the touring), nowt wrong with centre bearing when I undid that. So started taking the bolts out the guibo to drop the front of the prop down, removed 2 of the bolts and then it dropped down, errrrrrrr.
So the problem is that for some reason, I had lost a nut & bolt. Most strange. Obviously can't have fully tightened them all up when I fitted the guibo, what a retard.
So may aswell fit the new Lemforder guibo as it is going to be a better quality, oh and some new nyloc nuts
Driving around for the last few days changing gear at 2k and accelerating smoothly has been a bit of a chore, makes a difference from the usual 50-60 miles out of £20 of fuel

Ive never bought a new rubber donut thing, always just used good second hand ones, they last for bloody ages and only really old ones go generally due to sloppy engine/gearbox/prop centre bearing mounts. (all the usual E30 dilemas)

I've had similar guibo issues back when i had a M20, turned out to be failed bolts, not loose ones. They need to be torqued right up or they will fatigue and then snap.
I used a cheapo halfords bolt as a sunday fix and it didn't last until the following weekend
pretty hightly stressed!

They are meant to be replaced every time they are undone. One use only.

They're not expensive either, certainly a load cheaper than damaging a guibo when when an old fatigued bolt fails

What's the deal with track rod ends when E36 rack is used?
I've got E36 rack fitted, but just swapped it staight in with the E36 inner & outer tie rods still in place.
Since I have fitted the M3 eccentric bushes I have noticed I'm doing a good job of mullering the outer edge of the Toyos on the front so I really must get off my arse and get an alignment sorted out before they are toast. The current track rod ends look very rusty and may prove a nightmare for adjusting so I'm thinking about getting new rod ends before sorting the tracking.
Is there any disadvantage to using the E36 rod ends, before i go and buy a pair. I'd rather do this than fanny about swapping in new inner & outers from an E30.

The E36 rod end ball joint is bulkier than the E30 so can push the back plate onto the disc, especially if you have a big brake conversion, there is not much difference in price so best to go with the E30 gear IMOE30BeemerLad wrote: Is there any disadvantage to using the E36 rod ends, before i go and buy a pair. Only difference i've heard was from Dan, he said there's better clearance on the E30 rods. Only really an issue if you're going for bigger brakes. I ran E36 ends on my Z3 rack for a year with no issues at all, wheel alignment was done properly though

If they are very crusty, replace the whole track rod, not just the end and split both parts to apply some copper grease to the threads before bolting it all back together.

I'm sure I bought some new E30 rod ends before i did the rack swap, but then didn't fit them when I realised the E36 inner rods are different. I have my old E30 rack in the garage so I'll rape the inner rods off that and smarten them up and then fit the new E30 rod ends with plenty copper grease.
Got to get this damn Golf finished first though

Apparently, the shell for naughty drag car antics arrives in the next couple of weeks.
2dr white facelift without any grot (will believe that when I see it) basically a rolling shell with no interior, glass or exterior trim. Suits me fine

No gas axe mate, plasma
Lee, not sure what's going in it. The V12 is there but it needs more guts to it, 300bhp is fine for a vast road car, but probably no better than a very high 12 down the strip I reckon.

Some gas was my first thought, I reckon the V12 would take 100 shot all day long, maybe even 200 if it is done right. I'm planning on using an Auto box so that could be the weak link

My thoughts exactly, plus as it won't be shifting the 1.8 tonne of luxobarge around that it was plucked from, it may not protest too badly if I daisy chain an extra cooler in.DanThe wrote:Well its a cheap box to start out with, if it did shi t itself it wouldnt hurt that much would it

I don't honestly know who it is coming from, the guy I know through my boss races hot rods and this E30 was going to get banger raced, but it was realised it was too good. I think it was a 320 auto. It's getting dragged up from Kings Lynn way.Rav335uk wrote:Whos the shell from Lee?
The plans at the mo are a full spaceframe chassis, just cut the entire floor and front & rear bulkheads away. Ford 9" rear end, tub the rear end and just go from there.

I will probably keep my eye out for a small block chevy and keep things simple with a carb setup.

These arrived from brother Dan today, going to get them all wrapped up and fitted soon.

Also got to get some new front droplinks and new track rod ends and get the front tracking done as i have destroyed the outer edge of the Toyos on the front by not getting the tracking done after fitting the M3 eccentric TCA bushes
I must be due the MOT in the next couple of weeks
