Quick question.

Can an E34 M30 clutch be used with an E28 single mass fly wheel?

No, the pressure plate on the E34 clutch is quite a bit thinner and the friction plate is unsprung.

Bugger! I just bought a brand new genuine BMW E34 clutch for £80 posted!

Bloody bargain but in the haste of seeing said bargain a buying i forgot about the dual mass fly wheel they have!

M30 fly wheel will be too big for the bell housing on an M10 box, use the M10 fly wheel (which is single mass and light) with an uprated clutch.

Isn't the face on the M10 fly smaller than the clutch face of the E28?

Im going to say no. The friction plate on an M30 clutch is 240mm and M10 is iirc 215mm, im not certain but im sure the M10 fly wheel is also smaller in diameter so that would cause issues fitting the pressure plate then hoping the starter will hit the ring gear.

If you already have an E28 535i clutch kit you can use a single mass fly wheel from any E28 M30 or any M30 pre 87.
Im using one from an E28 525i as it lighter than the 3.5 ones @ 7.5KG (3.5 are 10KG)

I fitted a TTV custom fly wheel and a e34 3.6 m5 clutch to a customers m30 the other day, It made a real difference to the way the car goes

M10/M30 flywheels are the same diameter but smaller friction area. I'm using with my E34 535i engine: M10 flywheel, M10 paddle clutch rated for 250bhp from CG clutches, M10 release bearing, M10 gearbox, M30 starter motor, M20 prop and gear linkage.

I actually phoned them up and explained what I was using it for (which caused a fair amount of confusion!) and asked them to clarify if it was for M10s or M40s since they list E30 316 318 between the years of 1983 and 1995. They stopped making M10s around 1987-1988...

What I will say is that the clutch fits fine but I have only driven the car once. So far the clutch is a similar feel to the OEM clutch, I thought it would be much more brutal. Since I've only driven it once I can't really give a recommendation on how they hold up!!

As far as props and gear linkages go, 320i and 325i differ in length. My car was a 320i converted to a 325i before I got it and the prop and linkage from the car was a perfect fit. I don't know if they are 325i or 320i prop and linkage... I can attempt to measure the bits when I'm next underneath the car if necessary.

Thanks Rob0r, sounds like its going really well. I have a 318i and a 318is propshaft, i'll measure them up and see how they compare to yours.
