Pulling my hair out

Moving my car has turned out to be an absolute nightmare, my dads mondeo is a pure bastard to wire a trailer socket on and to buy the fuse board for it is almost 150 pounds. Cant seem to find somewhere to hire a towing dolly or A frame, and its about 200 pounds to have it delivered on the back of a truck. No MOT or tax, which i could get round by booking it an MOT and driving it up however the windscreen is held in with duck tape because it needs replaced and the seal was damaged anyway. Literally pulling my hair out over this shit. The yard its sitting in has been getting alot of, i cant says youths cos i am one, but dodgy people hanging round in it over night, and i want my car outta there.

What sort of distance is it? Can't you just get a mate with a tow rope?

why not get AA cover and claim you have broken down just outside the yard, take the risk that they dont notice it has not tax and if you dont tell them they will be none the wiser, get it recovered to where it needs to go

Tow bars are around £15-£20 just get one and tow it where you need to get, me and my brother towed an old 320ise back from around 60-70 miles away on a bar...

To tow another car it does need to be insured taxed and MOT'd i do believe

I thought it was insured through the vehicle towing it. Watching an old re-run of road wars the police do say if it is being towed with a proper bar then it is ok to have no tax or test. It was some guy driving a volvo s40 back because he'd 'just bought it' and the 'rope snapped'

Theres a tow bar on my dads car but we cant wire the socket up to connect the lights for the trailer. The AA thing might be an option, infact no its not, it doesnt even look legal to drive, the screen is duct taped in and the front left valance is hanging off, it looks ghetto as hell right now. im going from edinburgh to outside aberdoom so its about, 150 miles.

god those old mondeos were sooo, so ugly. thank fuck his a new one.

i think mercdriver, that could be the answer. and if i do get nipped il just bat my eyelids and say i wasnt aware of rules of towing tax and mot wise. which im not fully aware of so its not really lying anyway. thanks alot man!

its ok mate, i took my reg plates off and put an on tow sign in where the plate should of been. So that it couldn't be cloned for a petrol pump scam and anpr wont detect a thing!

just spoke to my dad and he has a tow bar but my mums being a bitch and wont sit in it as its being towed and he doesnt want me to cos iv never done it. think wer borrowing the neighbors shogun and its trailer ready.

theyr good cars the mondeos like, they dont break ever, and the MPG is pretty respectable

Get the screen fitted or attempt to do it your self (its not very hard) and drive it after booking a mot and giving them the registration first!

Dude the screen is cracked as hell, i need to order one. Then i would need to track down rubbers, then travel to the car, fit it, then drive it. itd be so much easier if it was on my driveway to fit the screen. i think im just gunna bite the bullet and get this guy with the truck to deliver it.

my understanding is if the road wheels are touching the road then it needs tax, mot, and insurance and i cant see Scottish traffic police letting any of them slide.

i would advise you fully check the law before doing this as its 150miles for things to go wrong.

hi dude. my mates been pulled for towing another car. if you have the front 2 wheels off the ground (say via a dolly) then its fine, but pulling the other car along via a rope or towing bar with all 4 rolling is a no no without tax and test etc. lucky for him the copper that pulled him let him off as he was picking up a car 50 odd miles away and being as hed just pulled off the blokes drive and only got 5 secs down the road the copper gave him the option of going back and returning to transport it properly.

Thanks alot lads, thats almost certainly saved me alot of bother. Yeah traffic pigs here arnt the happiest bunch of people and i doubt theyd take kindly to me dragging a beat up 3er 150 miles on a rope. 2 things could happen this week, dad fixes the wiring for the trailer and we get it. Or i get it delivered, a lad on here is helpin me with that or theres that guy in Aberdeen. I just want it on my drive so i can weld it, get the body done then get to lowering dubbing ETC.

There are exemptions to the lighting regulations that apply to towing broken down vehicles, provided the towing is done between sunrise and sunset.

I think its the driving wheels than need to be off the ground, so to tow an e30 on a dolly it need to be towed backwards with the rear wheels off the ground.

i seriously cant see it being safe towing with the steering wheels on the road dude

I'm pretty sure there are locking bars available for the steering.

But either way, towing a car which isn't road legal is a huge grey area.

I use an A frame for towing cars about and I put a light board on the back of the vehicle being towed. Never been pulled by the police but they have driven past me on the motorway etc.

Towed cars from Kent, Lincoln, Wales and Scotland to Merseyside without drama.

yeah but the problem is nowhere rents Aframes in scotland as far as i can see and i refuse to buy one for one use. should be trailering it home tomorrow

surley someone you know has a traders policy with trade plates ,ive flew into england loads of times and drove back cars with nothing but the smell of petrol in the tank but i had my mates trade plates and my traders policy never got hassled once

You still need an MOT to use trade plates. They just cover you for tax.
