On the above engine the distributor is on the side of the engine driven from the crankcase not at the front from the camshaft, is this version of the engine different from the norm. I am swaping this engine into my BMW convertible. It is in a 1988 E30 saloon, but it looks a fresh engine goes a treat and I think it has been a replacement engine, but from what car??

This is the very early ign system by the sound of it.
It may well be easier to swap the engine loom and management system from your existing engine onto the replacement, this will save a lot of head-scratching when it comes to getting it running properly.
In principle, the main components are the same, and in the same place,it's just the ign system and the control sensors that are different,it's important to accept that you should use all of one system, mixing and matching just does not work!
