My car has just developed a problem, every now and then my car just cuts out for a split second. If it does it on idle it just dies and then can be started back up again without problem and when it does it whilst driving its just as if I've taken my foot off the throtle for a split second and then it goes back to normal. Apart from when it does it on idle everything continues to work as normal, radio, lights, heater ect, the only thing odd is that the rev counter seems to switch off at the time the car cuts out and then starts to work as normal a split second later. I've got a few ideas as to what it may be but thought I would ask those of you (in my case most of you !) wiser than myself for a few suggestions. Any help very much appreciated ! Not the end of the world but its getting on my tits now, thanks in advance hopefully ! :cheese: :banghead:

Faulty Idle control valve caused this exact same problem in my car.

like sal said ICV is your culprit

but worth checking air flow metre and vacuum hoses too

Thanks for the reply's, the car is a 1990 320ise. If its the ICV would it be cutting out at any time or just on idle ? Sometimes does it at higher speeds (60 or 70), I'm not questioning your wisdom chaps, just want to be sure before I wiegh in me hard earned sorting it out. Thanks again

Take it off and give it a good clean with carb cleaner and try it again before changing it.

An intermitant fault with the engine speed sensor could also give a similar fault, can you get the ecu read for faults anywhere, might lead you to the source of the problem.

It would be the ICV at 70 mph if you let your foot off the gas, same problem in a /cough\ dreaded vaux ecotec engine /cough\

But carb cleaner usually works once or twice if you are lucky, then a new ICV.
