Hey chaps
My brother has a 51 plate BMW 728i in Titan silver, 113k, black leather interior, no bumps, very few scratches, parking sensors all round, some service history. He has just had the fuel tank taken off and restored as it was leaking.
How much should he expect to get for it? He wants to sell but I know that not many people want a 7, except maybe to yoink the M52 out.

A couple of grand, maybe £2500 at a push. It's the right model and colour and it's a very late one. They are now firmly in Council territory and a nice clean one without the usual Council mods (dodgy lights, fake M Paras, tints etc) is getting rarer by the day.

And the tank has been done. I've known E38s die because of the cost of a fuel tank replacement.

Is it a common fault on the 38's then? I've been looking as they are ballistic value for money when you think of what you get. Yes they are in the Council territory now but get a nice original one with sensible mileage and they take some beating. I sat in a 740i the other day in the breakers and despite it having a corsa on it's roof, it was still a very nice place to sit!

One of the other techs at work replaced a tank on an E38 a few weeks ago.

Is the tank not about £900? And it's apparently not half an hour to fit it either.

It is a common fault on the 728s and it is a unique tank IIRC. I know he had the car in for a couple of weeks while it was done. It has not been made council spec in any way, all completely original, including the Mtech wheels. The only thing it is missing to my knowledge is the car phone, but it still has the BMW adapter in the front armrest.
Where would be the best place to advertise it? It will be going on Pistonheads, that is about it, unless there is somewhere better for it to go. I would hate for it to have the engine pulled/weighed in, because it is a fantastic barge.

Ebay classified ad.
The E38 fuel tank is a work of genius.
E32 tank - decent gauge pressed steel but mounted under the boot floor so it can be removed in about 40 mins - not that they're known for rust and leaks.
E36 tank - mount it under the rear seat base so it's a bastard to remove, but make it out of plastic so it can't rust.
"I know. Let's make the E38 tank out of thin steel, give it the lightest dusting of satin black so it rusts, and mount it under the rear seat so it's a 3 hour marathon to remove it. Whilst we're there, let's price them at a ridiculous £900".

I'd try good old Autotrader as well - never had any real issues selling cars on there - unlike the d1ckheads who seem to populate Ebay these days

e30topless said : Proper BMW's have 4 headlights, last of the run was the E30 and E34/E32 anything after that is just complete shite

I just had to look on Ebay for E38's, see what the asking price is, and am amused by the amount of ads for wheels that are more expensive than the cars themselves.
The E38 is the best looking Seven there is, but as all 7's, they bleed money so fast..
Shame..

yeah, they are lovely 'luxury' motoring for peanuts.. the icing on the cake would be LPG! sadly though they are being turned into proper povvo-pimp wagons, there's one near me with chrome trim EVERWHERE and some gash wolfarse wheels with the wrong offset.. oh not to mention the obligatory bubble filled limo-tints...

Okay I will advise he puts it on Autotrader, with the bay being a last resort. It has pretty much lost what it is going to lose in depreciation anyway.
Here is a picture of it from the place he bought it from, only image I currently have of it!
