supercharging an m52...

i want to supercharge my m52..... not right now but its an idea id like to put into practice at some time. im at the beginning of the thought process.

been looking at chargers from the bmw mini cooper s,, (eaton m45). would this work?
and what are peoples thoughts on this?.............

If i was getting a blower on an M52 id be a bit dubious about the alloy block being able to take it.

charger on low ish (8 psi) would be better reliability wise wouldnt it

i thought the m52 was alright to turbo, theres so many vids of youtube of it.

don't know about reliability though, i know they can make silly power though!

How much power do you want then? why not go m3 engine instead?

hi kev, thing with the m3 engines is the manifolds are mega bucks to get right and to get the best from the engine. not only that ive got a good powerful unit to build on... its not the 52 is slow, its rapid but im thinking outside the box for my next move.
mini cooper s chargers are going for like 150 on ebay
but 300-350bhp would be interesting

ahh fair enough, i didn't know the manifolds were a potch on the m3 lumps never done anything with them yet. i do like the idea of a supercharger and i very much like the ally blocked m52 superb engine imo. so i suppose they would go well together really. i think it'd be a bit of a handful on a daily driver thats for sure haha.

If I was going forced, then I would want to swap the M52 guts into an iron block.

I know naff all about supercharging or anything to be honest, but I doubt one of those eatons would shift enough air for a 2.8 lump, they run out of puff on a 1.6 Cooper S.

I would go for a centrifugal supercharger like a Rotrex, but you're into £3k for the kit and then all the mapping or standalone ECU setup. I reckon you'd be £5k in by the time the job is done.

Personally, I'd take a turbo over a supercharger any day of the week.

as you say lee rotrex are mega mega bucks and if i was going that way id probably stay naturally aspirated and go s50 and have change lol

but im told with the eaton mini chargers you change the pulley thus uping the boost ect.......

You can buy a supercharger kit for the 2.8 off the shelf for about £3500

Probably best contacting Appletree, he used an Eaton on his 318is and I'm sure he moved on from that, so if it wasn't doing the goods on that, i doubt you'll see full potential on a 2.8 mate.

Power increases are addictive and you'll be going straight into the maximum capabilities of that setup and then want more.

I'd be tempted to consider going V8

Eaton 45 goes in the bin after 2.0lt and 200ish bhp.
