Shame they always possess galactic wallet emptying abilities also :(
Rule of thumb with these is "don't buy cheap ones"

Loads are available for less than you would think but they are from what I understand horrendous money pits... Whilst they are more common and chavy an e36 m3 is a better bargain M by all accounts!

Imho an even better value bargain fast bm is the manual e39 540i I know they are a bit of a wallowy barge but less than 2k for 286 bhp, 410Nm torque and 170 odd mph, 25+mpg, not to mention very comfortable... Ticks a lot of boxes :D

The E36 M3 4 door is the one to buy. Still plenty about, lots of cheap used bits etc. The E34 M5 is a big pit in which to throw pound coins - 3.8 EDC shocks are £1000. Each.

It'd be fair to say that from the remaining M5's, perhaps 10% are really good ones and 50% are just patched up scrap.

But this was/is a 3.6...shocks are not that much if you convert to standard (not sls)...

Rust is the worst problem but for £1k with MoT till next year and even a few months tax you can't go wrong...Run it, if it breaks, frag it...result = profit all the way and a few smiles whilst it's going...

Or turn it into a stonking track car.

Oh, there's no question that it wasn't worth a grand. If it wasn't caned to death there's a chance it might be a reasonable old smoker and as long as you didn't spend a bean on it (basic servicing apart) you'd always get your ££££ back.

There so many hateful w@nkers on Pistonheads, a really unpleasant forum.
