My passenger-side door brake doesn't seem quite right. It offers too much resisitance when trying to shut the door from the fully-opened position and there seems to be a lot of friction as the door swings shut. I'm always having to tell my passengers "I don't think you're door is shut all the way".
Is this a sign of a dying check strap?

Have you tried greasing the check strap & hinges?
Could try disconnecting the strap and feel how the door operates with out it.

The metal frame around the mechanism frequently breaks, but can be welded.
Take the door card off, peel back the membrane, remove the pin that holds the strap to the door pillar and undo the two bolts holding the mech. in place. You can then reach inside the door and remove the mechanism for inspection.
Carefull not to swing the door fully open violently with the strap off!.

The strap is definitely what's making the door hard to close. The hinges are well-oiled and the strap has been cleaned with WD40 and then white greased to death, so I don't think it's a lubrication issue.
Brian, no signs of breakage. I'm stumped! I suppose I could just bite the bullet and purchase a new one. But that wouldn't be very satisfying, would it?

i guess that means you have checked all the bolts are tight???!!!!especially the hinge bolts or the door check strap where it attaches to the door?? seems obvious but can be overlooked.
also if your hinges are misaligned could cause same problem.

The bit that breaks is completely inside the door. You won't see anything wrong untill you remove it.
