Not true, my mate ran out of talent in my old 320 slushbox and rolled it three times.

I don't know about pre 1980's but the E30 is the only car I have ever had with ABS and don't think I have ever used it. Been driving for 20 years and only one minor prang. I suppose it might be the way people drive.

I have just bought an Elise with no traction control, stability control, servo brakes etc etc. TBH apart from the extra speed, there is not much to get used to as I have driven similar in the past.

Passed my car driving test in 1968,motorbike test little over a year earlier.

'Available' cars to youngsters back then were things like mini's,E93A Ford Pop's,A35,Moggy Minor's and similar.When the back end went,it did so at a very modest speed,so a trip into the scenery usually only resulted in bent pride.
Modern cars go very much quicker,and are stuffed full of gadgets to make you feel safe....hence the resulting shunt is very costly,hence your insurance premiums are very much higher on a like for like basis compared to what I was paying as a young 'un.Seem to remember that my A35 cost £12 10s to insure,against a weekly wage of £18...

I think the ditchfinders were as much a contribution to it as anything from the look of it.. The crappy tyres were the 1st thing I noticed.

Only 4 things keeping you on the road.. I do not doubt you weren't pushing your luck, but it goes to show the whole line of 'I don't drive it hard' etc is a load of bollocks, when putting shit tyres on a car.

Fair point. Easy to be wise after the event - I won't be driving around on old tyres again, however much tread they have, and I never buy cheapo tyres anyway.

Frying pan & fire comes to mind.

E39s are nice cars but need regular maintenance. They don't suffer neglect well and are a lot more fragile than the E34. Rust around the bootlid and rear arches (where the rear bumper joins) are common, even on later cars. The earliest ones are nudging 15 years old now.

Finding a rust free E39 is an easier prospect than finding a rust free E30 though!

I'd pay up to £4k for the right car, but they are mostly junk. I think I'm limiting the choice somewhat by looking only at manuals, but I really don't fancy an auto.

Watching a tidy looking e30 cab on the bay today, but I'm a bit frightened of bidding without seeing it first - that's how I bought the brown un, and more and more I see how lucky I was...

Still looking for a replacement, been to look at 3 e30 cabs and they have all been tarted up junk. Why do people let you drive a hundred miles to see something that is obviously not as good as they have made out? Drives me up the wall!!!

I saw the bronzit 320i on Copart's website - it was sold a week or so ago.....looked a proper mess. Amazingly, it was sold as a Category C repairable!

You'd be better off looking for a really mint E34 tbh, a good spec one with low miles.

But true. There's a big roundabout on the A61 going into Sheffield that's a real menace. Following big trucks, you can often see it slopping out all over the road and on a wet but sunny day you can see the 'rainbow' streaks. I've had two 'moments' now, one being a 180 spin at low speed. The other day I was going round at low speed in the wet and the car didn't feel happy about it at all - steering going light etc.
