M52 Knock sensor

just been out in the tourer for a quick blat since putting the new engine in over the past few days,
1st nailed it, second nailed, smacked it in to 3rd, there was a little hesitation and then jabbed it in to 4th and it seemed to cut out for a second or 2?
what would cause this?

it happened with the old engine when i was at York raceway going up the strip,
and i put it down to the knock sensor, mebbies i was changing gear to harshly...?

The old one, I thought blew the headgasket,
(over heating, blowing like a volcano out the rad)
took it all apart, to find the gasket was mint, brand new almost,
then looked at the exhaust valve stems while the head was off
and they were....
white white, white white, white white, white white, BROWN BROWN, white white !!

so there is a crack in it somewhere,
and instead of going the S50 route, I just went out and bought a 328i
pulled the engine and plonked it in,
started first turn of the key this afternoon,

but this little problem has me a bit puzzled,
it only does it when im doing a harsh gear change,
and when it cut's out, if i take my foot off the accelerator, power comes back?

Driving normally, smooth gear change, it's mint

Craig, are you using standard inlet bellow? I can't remember.

Mick had a problem with his car at the pod, it was dying after each gear change. It turned out that the inlet bellow was being sucked inwards/ collapsing when he stabbed the throtttle wide open. He had a CDA air filter on it, which was obviously restricting flow a bit, so the inlet bellow was collapsing. On removing the CDA filter, it could breath better and didn't collapse inwards anymore.

Worth investigating and seeing what the inlet bellows do when revving the car in neutral. I think the problem was made worse on Mick's car when it was hot under the bonnet and the rubber elbow became softer.

Are you getting any warning lights on the dash when the fault appears?

I am just using the standard elbow from BMW
but it is connected to a BMC CDA
i'll take the car somewhere away from my whingy neighbours open the bonnet, stamp on the accelerator pedal and see what happens on the inducion side of things,

When Mick told me his was doing that the last time out at the strip, i thought his filter must of been clogged up with sh1te and just needed a cleaning,
but yeah i'll defiantly look in to that

oh and there is no warning light coming on when it happens

it's carbon and it blends well with the bonnet

I've just got a chavvy Ripspeed cone filter and never had any problems mate.

Have you still got the ABS fitted on the touring? If not, then an early E36 325i air box will do the trick also

Aye the abs is still there for the time being, but it is coming off, the 4 pot brembos dont like it,
nor do I
but thats besides the point........
me fookin starter has just packed in

I have changed the starter on my E34 auto twice in the last 12 months, and this one has also started to fck up...

1 Starter removed and a loner in it's way in about half an hour

I'll pull the abs off and stick in the E36 air box on, hopefully i can drive for a while without anything else going wrong...........

Is the m52 airbox not restrictive then? Most standard airboxes are fairly restrictive

Nope, has been discussed before with plenty of other engines, BMW air boxes are designed to work, not just to fit
