Discovery vs Range Rover ?

a petrol lpg classic in dark green is my ideal, or a 2.5 diesel, but its finding one thats reasonable enough distance/close ish, and then one in nice enough condition
just spent ages looking at them and completed on ebay, i do love the classics
i just cant justify a non lpg petrol 4.6 etc, work is a 50 mile round trip 4 times a week plus 2x 20 mile round trips, plus sept-christmas will be working 6.7 nights a week, and may even hit 7x50 mile round trips a week at the peak, in a 4.6 v8 will just be ridiculous, its not used much on an all year round basis but will be all the time through heavy winter and the colder months, so has to be a 2.5 diel or an lpg petrol
classic prices seem to vary, and im open to maybe spending 800-1200 on one that needs work, or 1500-2.5k on a nice one
having thought about today and driving the diesel hse, id rather a nice classic for the same money as an ok/not all that hse/newer one definatly, its just seeing and waiting and looking around the local/ish ones
or was thinking earlier, maybe even a defender ? proper off road style, sacrifice a bit of winter comfort , for a better off roader and all year round weekend fun toy for around 3k, which will probably hold value more and be more of a toy and get in to more green laning and having 4x4 fun, and also get about in the snow and ice easy

I hope your not in a hurry. £2500 for a P38 is middle of the road money / cheaper end of the range. They've all had a hard life especially the deisels and 90% of them are now scrap! I've just done 2 headgaskets on a 2001 4.6 p38 and I have to admit, despite being loaded with toys, the thing is like an antique.
I've never seen the attraction of the Jeep either?
I'd be looking at a Shogun or Pajero.

Tbh jeep people are as blinkered as landrover (fake jeep) people. If you try a 4.0 Cherokee (forget the other engines) and love it like I do you'll get lots for your cash with more power, better economy and better reliability than a 4.6 range.
For a more rational choice of winter commuter you could try an X-trail or just get some winter tyres.

Great car. Had one years ago. Better than a LR90.Blitz wrote:Lada Niva?

Have you driven an ' offender' ? Lets just say they have more in common with a Massey Ferguson 35 than a car !
thing is pete, you gotta half take what people say with a pinch of salt about things like this...
exactly the same was said when i posted last year about buying a discovery, dont buy a disco scrap, waiting for the AA, hasstle agro expensive fixes break down land rover crap blah blah blah, i bought one and never had any problems with it at all and it was bomb proof reliable, great off road and fun to drive, awsome in snow and ice, it sat weeks un used then start up on the button and drive 500 mile round trips with 4 ppl and loads of camping gear in, i had immense fun with that and all in all near broke even bar £200 insurance cost for a year, cant fault the discovery, i know you have to be careful, but still
thers a place on ebay i saw, with range rovers and land rovers etc, lower end/mid money ones that gives a whopping 12 months parts and labour warranty
on all their cars sold, even 2-3k ones
cash is king at the moment, and 3k budget would still get you a nice half decent 4x4 , and im not going to hammer one and drive it in to the ground and be a country/towing work horse
yes drove a defender before and know they arnt the most comfortable road fairing, but still they look the buinsess and great off road and still great fun, drove them around festival sites in mud etc and loved it, also drove a warrior
with 3k if you look about and wait you can get something half decent that will serve a purpose, afterall i just sold my disco for £2100 and that will do the fella super he loves it and will be bomb proof reliable for him

just been to look at this as was 5 min drive away, had a good look and a drive etc and a god chat for half hr with the chap, nice bloke, knows a lot about 4x4s n had a few there, does proper off roading etc in a pure off road discovery coversion thing
hes looking at £3700, said ideally 4k , wel see how auction goes
not quite sure what to make of them, love the look and feel in that country sense, drove lovely and felt lighter than the disco and fun to drive to be honest, manual 300tdi engine, but not much leg room , seat doesnt go back far enough for me ideally
absoloutly no mod cons, a heater and a stereo ! , but very solid, bomb proof, not much to go wrong in an electrics sense etc, great to load up with stuff and go camping and off road in
yet same money as a nice enough range rover p38 etc or more than a nice classic
primarily..its for winter and work use town-motorway-town, when its freezing cold, all winter long driving it , and when i think that maybe something with big leather seats and warm inside with mod cons makes sense
he had a pajero there, said really they are sh!te, cheap and cheerful jap 4x4 are nothing compared to land rovers in so many ways
i like the defender look and functionality tho , but at the end of the day its still like driving round in an old army jeep type thing than any sort of lxury 4x4
cant quite get my head around that vs a disco in terms of all round good, its like take away nice heated electric seats, comfort, nice heaters, heated screens, nice feeling to drive like a mobile front room, good capable off road and fun go anywhere, nice to take people in and go out for the day etc, nice winter mobile...for really a baked bean can

I had enough of landrover defenders in the army when I was getting paid to be cold, wet and miserable. Sod paying for the privilege!

thats what i do think, i do however love the look and they do have something about them, and as more of an off roader would be a good/fun all year round toy to have sat there and a lot of weekend fun, where as a disco/range rover etc would be sat about a bit more maybe
is it possible to comfy/warm up a defender cab do you think ?

Believe me, the earlier shoguns are not a bad car. And you've already written elsewhere you were warned away from Discos but bought one and it's been great and therefre don't believe everything you read / hear..
Theres no way I'd drive that Defender everyday! It would drive you mad!!!
Seems to me you've already made your mind up. Just by a p38 and be done with it.

the pajero was rubbish, wasnt even in a good way, but i know what your saying, like i said i do agree about driving it every day, but mind is far from made up and im in no rush, ideally id like a classic if i can find one and the right one
