The barnacles alone have welded that treasure chest well and truly shut, the padlock is as seized as an M30 exhaust bolt :D

The car has had a bit of a rumble feeling coming from the back end for the last week or so when accelerating.

After spotting that Ant had the same problem with his car, which he found the diff retaining bolts loose, I stuck my nut underneath this afternoon with the super long flat 19mm spanner ready for action, only to find them all tight. Then I noticed the rear bush on the diff back plate looks a bit poorly.

I'm hoping that is the problem. I haven't looked at the guibo at the front of the prop (but that was brand new when I did the swap, along with the centre bearing).

For lazyness I may go for a polybush replacement. Looking at the weeping on the back plate I may take it off for ease of removing the old bush and then replace gaskets etc and new oil.

Is it possible to get the back plate off without having to drop the diff? Once the cover plate bolts are undone, will the cover plate just drop straight down or do any internals spoil the fun?

Well some graft done on the car today at long last.

Changed out the AVO -55 front springs for the Eibach's, can't remember what drop they even are  probably about -35-40mm. Anyway it sits level again instead of the arse in the air.

Also finally fitted the M3 eccentric lollipop bushes, they were entertaining to fit.

Been for a drive and a noticeable improvement in comfort and general feel. I am used to avoiding potholes and other dramas due to the spine shattering feel of the -55, but this was sublime.

Took some pics which I'll post up later with some of my scrap I have for sale.

Next mission to replace the diff bush and do the Vanos seals. Think I'll do the diff bush first and then crack on with the engine swap in the golf as the chromie will at last make a civilised daily.

Got them 2nd hand off Capri_Rob about 6 months ago. They had only been fitted to his chrome turd for a month or 2. Think I paid about £80

Lee, had a look at my dif bush while underneath and mine looks in a good state.... Took out the 2 front dif bolts and applied a shite load of thread lock then put them back in... She's going on my mates ramp first thing to have the back ones put in.

Tried on the deck with stands at full tilt but the car was wobling above me as I tried to move the dif to re-line it up... Not good

Somehow the 2 back ones did the off so I had to buy 2 from bmw @ £1.06 and will go in with a feck load of thread lock also. What is happening in my case is the rear dif bolts went missing and the dif has sat arse down- prop up! So when ever I gave it some wellie the prop fouled the tank 8O.

All sorted once I get her on a ramp tomoro lol

Diff oil ordered from Opie.

Ferg, yeah the compressor comes in handy with some windy gun action for when I'm being lazy, plus not much argues with over 300ft/lb. Apart from cheap non-impact sockets :)
