Introductory page in that link is wrong! The rotary heat control on an E30 is a simple switch (first few degrees from cold), not a rheostat. The valve is powered off when the control is at full cold, and returns to its unpowered fully open default state at all settings of the control.
Heat adjustment is by an air blending flap inside the hater box. The valve just makes sure that when set to cold, the heater is truly cold.
The only fault I have ever known with a heater valve (other than one that has been connected to flow the wrong way around) is that it pulls the rivets holding the two halves together, and leaks.
This is often caused by a faulty radiator pressure cap that hasn't been changed under the 1996 safety recall.

Yeah man. sometimes describing your fault could save you a wack load of time and money. many of times i have thought one thing was wrong with my car and i've asked about and its came up with the trumps.

Well it was the matrix, got it out pretty easily really , about 1 1/2 hours.Result: the plastic bit on the end was split.
