Discovery vs Range Rover ?

Need a bit of advice please
Had my land rover discovery since december, costs me £200 to insure, its never let me down and sits there un used waiting for the call, mot and tax ,re insure etc in december
its a 1997 discovery ES in silver 300tdi (2.5 diesel engine) , it really has been great and nothings broke etc and ive looked after it and its great to load up with stuff when needed and camping etc
a mate of mine wants to buy it, and it will leave me breaking even on it owning for the year, which would be good,but i really really like the look of range rovers, a classic vogue, or a p38 maybe, really want one in dark green or a dark color, would want a same 2.5 diesel one , although ive never driven one, but looove the look of them
so - do i sell the disco and have just over 2k in the pocket towards a range rover, and either look for one for around 1.5-2.5k for a classic, IF i can find a suitable one, or put a bit more towards and buy a p38, and maybe risk trading in a rock solid reliable disco, or do i keep the disco
also anyone got any idea what would be better on fuel ?
or- do i maybe look for a smaller cheaper to run 4x4 of some sort ?

Range Rover = money pit, especially the P38. The 2.5s are asthmatic in a bigger, heavier bodyshell so will cost more to run. Probably a higher insurance band and at that sort of cash it's not going to be a great example.
My advice would be to stick with what you've got unless you have a burning desire to waste money.

serve the disco at 2k it would be rude not to !
the P38 is a nice thing but not many good one's out there the diesel is a turd, try get an LPG converted version with the upgraded springs/shocks the airbags are expensive to repair and often fail !

thing is- i dont want a money pit, i just love the range rover looks, mate up the road who owns a garage has bought a dark green range rover classic vogue, full leather etc, its mint looking, looks the absoloute business !! id rather a nice classic vogue over a p38 due to the risks and potential electrical problems etc, its just finding a nice un abused classic is that easy
the disco- i paid £1900 for it+200 to insure, had a good years driving out of it, spent a cple of hundred on bits, hes offering me £2100 cash
i know il want one in the winter,il need one for work etc, so i can either keep the disco, or get 2100 and i can put a grand or so in no worries on top- but then i think do i really want to spend 3k on a 4x4 il only use in the winter and then not much the rest of the year, like a p38- im not so sure, my disco is a 1997 es- full leather, big heated electric leather seats etc, its all round nice condition and never let me down , although after owning one id like a nice dark color, although in the winter the silver is the best color in snow and ice etc, and its capable off road and good to load up, this summer a few times ive loaded it up with 3 mates and all our camping gear and gone to work at festivals etc and had a right old laugh and its been faultless
but- i do see range rover classics n think id love one of those...

Sell the disco, buy an lpg converted Jeep Cherokee XJ 4.0. All the toys of the range rover, more power and superb reliability. Plus it is as simple to work on as an e30.

i dont need the money for the sport dan, the sports all sorted and only small things need doing really, plus got the cash from my is sat there, sports going in the garage nov-march, and want a 4x4 for winter
dont think id get cheap insurance on a 4.0 cherokee morat, plus they are quite big
a 2.5 petrol /lpg one just up the road, what sort of ££ is it worth ? might go for a look and a test drive maybe n see what i think, although think id much prefer a range rover or to just keep the disco

A cherokee is no bigger than a Range Rover, and I can't see there being much difference in insurance either. Don't bother with the 2.5 or the diesel. The 4.0 Ltd is the pick of the litter because it has the big unstressed straight six and the bulletproof AW4 transmission. With regular oilchanges these babies will outlast even an M20. Then it's just a matter of checking all the electrics and the floor/arches for rust (as with any old turd these days).

ok thanks morat, migt go look at one, although it was really the range rover look , and just swapping my disco for one , which was on the mind, my disco is rock solid, cheap to insure etc,so id probably keep that if a range rover was a no go, not much point jkust swapping it for soemthing for the sake of it, but might look in to it, the seller of that green 2.5/lpg one messaged back, hes looing for 1200 - might take 900-1000 cash to get rid, would mean a grand in my pocket, and cheaper type soloution, would a 2.5 petrol be cheap to run with lpg ? not too fussed about performance as its a 4x4 i just cruise along

It should be pretty cheap on fuel, but the only engine choice in the US was the 4.0 so that's where the support/info is on the US forums.

sold the discovery today, shes gone, we had fun !
but tax, mot, new insurance, - all expense comming up so best to break even now on it and have the ££ in the bank

how big is the lpg tank on your ones and what sort of cost to fill it, and how many miles from it ? and mpg ?
and what sort of mpg if its running on petrol ?
id be open to an lpg if i can and it ment great fuel savings, as my work is now double the distance 4 or 5 nights a week 50 miles round trip a time, and 2 trips of 20 mile round trip, so need to bear that in mind
sport goes in the garage end of october when tax runs out, until spring when the ice and grit are gone

I am waiting for comfirmation on whether my bid has been accepted on an 03 plate 4.7 with prinz LPG. It is fully fruited and has only done 70000 miles but has a few minor issues , hence my £1500 bid

so with the injector pump...when buiying would it be a case of ONLY buying one when the pump has been replaced ? what if it hasnt but looks and drives nice etc ? and how much ££ is it to fix if it goes ?

but to be fair..when i was looking at my disco, people on here were all for jeep and jap ones,and said dont buy a disco this that that etc...i got one and it served me brilliantly and never let me down, was great fun,and we had good times, this summer loaded it up a few times and drove to festivals with 4 lads and loads of camping gear to work, and it was super all last winter in the snow
lad i work with had a p38 him and his mrs for 3 years, said it was super, i know some if you get electrical probs can be iffy, im not sure il buy one, but i have 2 months to sort something out

If you just need a basic 4wd turd to get around when there is snow on the ground etc, why bother with a big old turd like a Range Rover, Disco etc etc. Just get something like a Suzuki SJ or Jinmy thing as they are cheap to buy and cheap on fuel & insurance etc.

went for a look at the blue rangey today, walked away, but only intended as a benchmark and to get a feel for them
paint work wasnt brilliant ,interior a bit grubby but ok, that rear ding meant new indicator and quater panel needed painting ideally, slight rust in the ding, lower tailgate ideally needed painting and the bumper had been re painted and not great, bit of rust on the chassis,right near the sea and salty sea air, suspect beach/sailing use, as he had sailing club stuff on his house, but no holes just a lot of flakey and general quite a lot of corrosion underneath, tyres ok not great needed a new one, slow starting, drove ok air suspension worked nice, slight creek when turning left on the wheel, alarm key fob not great seemed a bit iffy, but full mot yesterday no advisories, just felt like it not been overly cared for and looked after and maintained best it could

i think if the standard of range rovers are like that for 2.5k then a sub £1k cheap 4x4 will be better

grand cherokee was in front of me today... if you watch the car body it seems to shake side to side like most american cars. Been in a few as well and always thought them to feel very loose and bouncy.
I'd go for a 4.6 p38 range and spend money on a good one. Fuel can't be an issue if you aren't going to use it much? Or a very good classic
