ive just been looking at an advert for ultra lightweight carbon fibre bonnets for my touring from Rieger uk, prices are from Ԛ£495, does anybody have any experience of these bonnets? are they a good quality c/f? ive seen other bonnets in the past where the edges have been a bit ropey.

There is a guy who can make e30 bonnets and front wings. He makes high quality carbon fibre bows and arrows.
Would need a few of us to make it worth his while.
I'll post details up at some point (proabbly 2morrow)

I don't want to piss on your parade but a few kgs don't make any differance on the road, if you were contemplating track racing or hill climbs for example and you've allready stripped out the car then i'd go for it , otherwise save your dosh.
I had a c/f bonnet made in the USA for my 8series .cause i wanted a copy of Alpinas vented and louvered bonnet, once fitted it was too light for the bonnet struts to be used,so off they came to be replaced by a broom handle to hold it open !!!!!!!!!!.
The c/f bonnet is now screwed to the garage ceiling to remind me what a waste of money it was, i now have fitted a replica but converted from the original, iknow, what i wanker you might think, youre probly right cause i'm too embaresed to say what it cost, must have been on drugs!!

of course it makes a difference, if you consider your car feels a little bit slower when your carrying passengers. about 80kg would be your average person., if you can save that amount then it would have been like you had a permanent passenger before

The E30 bonnet only weighs 15 kgs so you arn't going to lose much.
If i had the money i would have a non-sunroof skin put on as the frame work, sun roof and motor must be 30 or so Kgs at the highest point on the car so will help lower the CG if removed.

I don't notice any difference in my 323i with 1 passenger, 2 passengers and it doesn't feel quite as quick. I had the passenger seat, rear seat and door trims pulled out for a couple of track days and that made no difference to the way the car felt or to the lap times (but then lap times can be 0.5sec different depending on temp, track condition, etc.).fuzzy wrote:of course it makes a difference, if you consider your car feels a little bit slower when your carrying passengers. about 80kg would be your average person., if you can save that amount then it would have been like you had a permanent passenger before
I still like removing weight though but for the price a carbon fiber bonnet might not be the best idea first. My wheels weigh 6.5kg which saves about 4kg total over something like the 15" BBS and that is unsprung weight too which should help handling more and it is at each corner so the weight distribution stays the same. They cost less than 350 GBP.
