Hi, I'm pretty new to all this and was just wondering if someone could confirm what type of engine my car should have. I have a 1985 320i, which from what I can work out (from this site and haynes) will have been fitted with an M20 motronic engine. Just hoping someone can confirm or corect me...thanks!

It will be M20B20 engine with the jetronic ECU system, motronic was on the later M20B20 cars.
Edit: Dose the engine have the ICV fitted ?
i think all jetronic's had a dizzie, while motronic had the dizzie on the end on the camshaft....

Cheers for the info! I've been looking for the ICV all week, but havn't found it as yet so I'm begining to wonder if there is one. I didn't realise some cars wern't fitted with them. I'm currently trying to find my way round the engine so I can do some work and save some pounds on garage prices, but it's got me stumped!

My first E30 was a 320i with the M20 B20 jetronic.
You cant miss the ICV if it is fitted, connected just behind AFM and to Throttle body, in either a T or L shape. Yours should not have one fitted, you should have a thin vacum hose coming from the back of the intake manifold round to the throttle cable linkge into what looks like a gong thing.
Easy way to check, have you got the dizzie behind the alternator or on the end of the camshaft(front)?

I've no idea to be honest, I'll check in the morning as it's dark and wet now. What is the dizzie? Is it the distributor? Sorry...Im not fully up on the lingo yet, I'm only a beginner!

Yep dizzy is the distributor.
The earlier cars with jetronic had a distributor on the air filter side of the engine block, whereas later cars had the distributor on the front of the engine attached to the end of the camshaft and squeezed in between the engine and the radiator.
You can just about see the dizzy in my sig pic. Follow the plug leads to the front of the engine. It's under the black plastic cover.
Cheers,
Iain T
