I ran through the gears and they seemed to be comming on when going from 1st to secound and when back in neutral. I then removed the rubber bung thats round the gear stick the refited it and all seems well again ?????? Any have any idea what may have cuased this ?
Any Thoughts most welcombe.

Sounds like the insulation on the reverse light loom under the car has perished and the wires are shorting together. It'll only be a matter of time before they short to earth as well, popping fuse 10, which serves a few other important things, besides the reverse lights.

Fasten the harness up to the bracket that supports the gearshift, then it's out of the way of moving parts.A cable tie will do.

There should be steel clips fixing it to the fixed bar of the gear linkage, but cable ties will do the job.

Perhaps the steel clips have rusted away, even high quality BMW steel rusts...Brianmoooore wrote:There should be steel clips fixing it to the fixed bar of the gear linkage, but cable ties will do the job.

my prop rubbed through the reveres light loom once on my old mineral blue 2dr and this caused the reverse lights to stay on.
mr moore gave me a clue as to what might have happened though

Done this and I also pulled a bit more of the cable into the cabin to take up some slack... The only clip I noticed was on top of the gear box which was still intacked
