Expansion tank on battery tray possible?

I've got a alloy rad to fit for my conversion and a expansion tank, my touring didn't come with one originally so was going to fit it on the battery tray. Apart from needing brackets of some sort can it be done, is this a suitable location for it?

How are they plumbed in to the cooling system, how/where will the pipes run with this kind of setup?

it's on the wrong side though. you need the vent pipe to the top of the rad and the bottom pipe of the expansion tank goes to the pipe under the inlet manifold on a standard set-up.

The other side is a bit cluttered though between the airbox and abs. I thought prefacelift had the expansion tank over the exhaust on the strut tower?

By standard setup what do you mean? I'll be fitting a m50 inlet manifold if it matter. I'm not at all clued up on the cooling system (and many other things )

Having just gone out to the car, with expansion tank, to have a look how it fits I just realised my idea isn't going to work There's 2 thin tubes coming of the neck of the cap and going forward and a larger outlet at the bottom to the rear, not leaving any/much room to rout this forward. Mounting the tank backwards won't look right.

Any idea's for an expansion tank and how to route everything?

yes, it's possible.
m3's have it there.
i fitted an expansion tank there on my last s62 conversion, as the nearside inner wing was also very cluttered.

I can't quite make it out from either pics, the bottom pipe runs between the engine and the bulkhead with this setup.

i've just had a look and your right, the last pics in the thread show it on the nearside inner wing.
but i ended up putting the throttle potentiometer there. then mounted the header tank on the battery tray. i used a m20 header tank and made a bracket to suit.

The expansion tank is plumbed into the return from heater run, you can use a LHD S50 steel pipe which runs round the back of the engine and up to the battery tray area, part number is - 11531318403

The same part from a rhd e36 m3 won't work? Diagram looks the same on realoem, but that can mean little.

RHD E36 M3 has the expansion tank on the opposite side, our N/S passenger side
