You know you usually buy me a rubbish christmas present, well here's your chance to redeem yourself!

Just a heads-up as we're down to the last few days where if anyone wanted to order a kit now I can just about keep it at 17.5% vat instead of 20%.

The reason is that HMRC has made a rule that as long as something is paid for before the vat rate goes up in Jan, the "vat date" can be in Dec (17.5%) instead of being the shipping date (which is the usual rule, and forces the vat to 20%).

So if anyone wants to dive in and save that extra 2.5% drop me a PM ASAP!

Could you post some photos of your discs please? There looks to be a lot of surface rust from the discs on the pads - if your discs are rusty they will of course increase the rate the pad abrasion / wedging effect occurs compared to a clean disc? This normally means the outer pad in each caliper wears faster then the inner as the inside face of the disc is protected from the elements and stays rust-free!

No problem! That disc does look very corroded doesn't it - you need to get those rust lines gone completely or they'll cause a hot-spot that distorts the disc. They look like they are caused by water sitting in the groove in the pad (rusting the disc) while the car's not being used? Also the inner mounting face of the disc is too corroded, so the hub probably is as well?

If the car's stood up outside it might be worth "bagging" the front wheels up to keep the rain out, otherwise this will keep happening!

The other thing to watch for is stopping the car on hot brakes as it can leave a pad-print, remember the cool down lap (for the rest of the car as well).

I know, it doesn't make sense. I totally understand what you are saying re the rust lines. The pics were taken when I had only cleaned them with brake cleaner. I got rid of those lines with a light emery cloth and more brake cleaner prior to refitting. I do always do a cool down lap, well half a lap at least. The only thing I can think off for the excessive corrosion was maybe not washing the car down thoroughly enough after a drift day at Oulton in the snow where they kept spraying the surface with salt water to keep the tyre squeal down. ( they cleared the snow in the morning) and had to use salt water because of the freezing temps.

Ah, could well be - in any case the trouble with uneven pad material transfer is anything that sets up a hotspot on the disc will start the process (disc runout, rust or a pad print etc), and once it's happened its hard to reverse.

A good sanding (back to 100% bare cast iron) and new pads might do the job as you are nearly bedding the friction surfaces in from scratch, let me know how you get on!

The projected pricing is:


RB001 rear 290mm kit = £414.30+vat (discs, brackets, calipers, bolts)
Brake lines = £32.51+vat

With luck I can shave some off this when I get the first batch machined....

I generated the brake bias info for the E30 vs WMS kits a while back, and I was sure I'd posted it up here, but I can't see it!!!

So here you are, numbers for the crunching (showing the bias is nearly kept at factory, and that piston area has a bigger effect than bigger discs!):

The 280mm kit is fine, lots of clearence, but the 298.5mm kit, i think it should be fine with the 2mm spacer, what you think?

For sure, it will be my first option for upgrading the brakes, when i finish the rebuild of my engine.

Thanks for taking the photos, they are really handy. It looks like there's 2-3mm of clearance there? If so that's just about enough, so you shouldn't need spacers...

Just found the templete in a box (moved house 2x in the last 7-8 months) only tried the 298 templete and unfortunately I will need different wheels, or maybe you can come up with a better fitting key?

That's annoying, wheel inside profiles drive me mad! Thanks for doing the test though, really handy info. Could you possibly try three variations?

- 16x7.5 / 4P028 (in case the wheel shape is more useful)
- 16x9.0 / 4P025
- 16x7.5 / 4P025

i am running the RX7 4 pot kit with 280 mm discs and race hawk pads on my E30 track car with the 3 litre M3 lump in it.

car is light so more than up to the job. pretty cheap conversion too.

the bloke who looks after my car has his wilwood 4 pots up for sale with 280 mm discs too if that helps? he was running that set up on his E30 with 15 inch ATS rims. good ET of 15 and 8J rims.

Been following for a while, and yes pretty interested in how these would do as a F+R kit. I just didn't know if the rears have options like the fronts do. And how many greenbacks it's gonna take...

That, yeah, and grooving or what-have-you. That allows a little better cooling, iirc? Would the 5% zone discount still be on each kit, or applied after total price of kits, pads, and lines?

Grooving would still be available as an option for those that want it - but it's not really got much of a performance advantage these days as modern pads are far better at not gassing as they get hot. Grooved don't help to any real degree with cooling, nowadays it's mainly to reduce glazing on race pads, and also we find it helps reduce brake squeal if it occurs.

The 5% applies to the kits (front and rear) but not the other bits (pads / lines / spacers).
