as above smokes intermittently...anyone know of any simple causes,.. not for me I might add ..its a mates

valve stem seals or piston rings, worst case senario, head gasket. Depends on what kind of smoke.

could be all sorts, maybe the cyclone valve for the crankshaft breather is blocked and the intake is therefore gulping in excess oil?

by any chance is it idling badly and breathing quite heavily from either the oil cap or the breather pipe?

Neil, crank breather on his 328i is under the inlet manifold behind the alternator, black plastic cone shaped with a diaphragm housing on top.....bitch to get apart without breaking. :)
