jesus... people must really be moving on from the poor little M42 these days.

would have thought a S42 bottom end would have sparked off some drooling if nothing else :P

Not a whole lot really yet on the engine thats in it at the moment..
Chip and ECU re-map, BBTB, heater-plate delete, adjusted cam-timing, raised fuel pressure, ligthened M20 flywheel and 325 clutch with the 6 speed box.


New one is a 2.1 stroker with ITBs though :)

It would be nice to have the cash to buy these bits, i think the m42 is underated. Just getting the bits together for a 2.1 engine for rallying. Does anyone know the je part number for the pistons used??

dave m3 the mods on your m42 are the noticable? and what 6 six speed box have you got on yours?

im just toyying at the moment what to do to my m42 :/ got gaz coilovers coming in 2 weeks i might put the full set of polybushs on it but performance why im stumped iv advanced my cam timing but thats really all i can see to do to have cams re ground by piper its 150 do you no if that will be worth it?

Chip and re-map is the most noticeable engine mod on mine so far.

Messing around with the timing makes a difference too and can shift the power back and forth the rev range but feels best by just advancing the inlet to get abit more mid-range.
It's still hard to notice but I have seen reports of making 2 and 3bhp at certain points in the rev range from others.


raised fuel pressure and heater plate removal as well as the bbtb make very little difference but every little helps I suppose :)



The lightweight flywheel is very noticeable however!!!
And the 6 speed box just makes it nuts to drive :D


It's an E46 M3 6 speed manual thats in it, I had an E36 M3 Evo box in it before that.

lightweight flywheel iv heard alot about this is there anywere you can pick a lightened one up cheap?

was a lot of fabrication needed to fit the six speed box did it improve aceleration and top end?

If you go for the light fly wheel, it will make 'normal' driving in town and stuff a bit of a stall fest nightmare, since it makes the revs drop like a stone. I suppose you get used to it though, and good heel/toe practice. Youll see perfomance benefit, but your comfort will suffer.


They are pretty expensive new as well, Im not sure on E30s but I expect not much change from 300 quid.

I'm sorry but thats bullshit and an urban myth really unless your talking about total featherweight flywheels coupled with extremely aggressive clutches and cams :P


I just used a lightened M20 flywheel on mine Tony which is a good improvement and a stronger clutch which helps.


The 6 speed conversion is reasonably straight forward. It made acceleration a good bit quicker especially in terms of point to point or B-road hooning early in the morning :D


As 6th is the same ratio as an E30 fifth it made no difference in top end but as the early gears are much shorted I am switching to a 3.91 LSD next time car is back on the road which will give longer top end and better crusing yet still better pull in the early gears than if you had something like a 4.27-4.45 with a normal 5 speed.


For the odd bit of messing, its able to drift in 2nd and 3rd gear all day long too or do dounuts in 2nd if you really want to act like a dick, lol.
