Recently had Halfords fit this stereo to a newly acquired 325i Touring. Battery died a week later.

Only just got car, so don't know history, how old battery was (not sealed, so I'm guessing old) etc.

Trying to get some reassurance that it's wired correctly and not the cause of the battery issue.

Instructions say that red and yellow leads should be paired, except that 'depending on the vehicle' this is sometimes reversed...helpful!

Blue/white leads get connected, except 'in another type of vehicle'...'never connect [the blue and white leads]'.

Really grateful for any help.

Wow, what a great installation!!!!! 8O
Is it rude to ask what halfords charge for that???
I thought they'd at least crimp the connections!!

Does the stereo switch on/off with the ignition??
If so, the red and yellow connections are correct!!
One should be switched 12v (Red at the h/u I think) and one should be constant (so it remembers your settings - clock, radio stations, etc!!)

As long as the stereo doesn't stay on when you leave the car, it shouldn't be that causing any drain on the electrical system!!!

Thanks. Stereo works fine and does go on/off with ignition. Settings are remembered also.

£24 for the fitting. It looks neater when the stereo is actually in.

£24 not a bad price to be fair, but i still would've expected it to be crimped, with connections covered!!! It'll do the job though!!

i fit better than what halford have and i have done a lot of stereo's. In some cars the Red and Yellow needs to be joined but generally that is for a perm power supply for the memory of the head unit only (again, generally) depends on the specific unit and car its going into, also depends if the existing wiring has ever been tampered with.

i would be very annoyed to pay 2 pound 40 for that job, its very poor and i would even say unprofessional...but as above it will work fine.

the wires to the left of the photo are your power and ground wires, (from the car) brown is ground, red and green is the permanent live, purple white is the switched live..i.e. it comes on with the ignition. thus your first step is to ensure the stereo wiring requires red to be permanant live and yellow the switched live.

some other wires i see is the blue/white, this is the signal wire used to trigger the electcal ariel or an amplifier..it is not a power lead only a signal lead. Orange i see is genrally the dimmer wire, which dims the display when you trun on the headlight, this can be wired to the headlight switch (or in some E30's a red/white wire...this is the lights on signal) the other wires i cannot tell

it is not good practice to run red and yellow from one supply (even a permanent one) as then the amp, lights and CD motor all run from one supply, thus reducing the voltage to the amplifier and casuing distortion (and the tell tale facia lights dimming when the bass notes
sound)

For your problem i doubt it is the stereo, i would suspect the battery being too old to hold charge, but if you have a multi meter then with the car running you should have about 13.5volts across the battery terminals, if not suspect your alternator is duff

Hi all, I have a 1989 bmw 316i and its never had an aftermarket stereo in it so it still has the old pioneer cassette player/radio in it. However I would like to put my aftermarket stereo in and take the old stock stereo out. The only problem is I dont know where the wires go? Does anyone have a wire diagram?

Thanks.

Ryan.
