hello

my 1986 325i mtec 1 sport is having issues fuel system heres the story to date

the car lay up in a container for about 12 years when i bought it was smoking really bad and off a few cylinders. the oil was saturated with petrol. got it sorted and running well.

changed the petrol filter when i turned it upside down dirty rusty fuel flowed out.

i changed the sender unit because the guage wasnt working the old one had seized and was very orange with rust the new one came with a new guaze filter attatched to it but the man in bm parts also gave me a new strainer which looks like a small circle 2p coin size made of fine mesh but i am not sure where this goes.

took it to mot and within a few miles the fuel pump went noisy then it began to cut out particulary under load when you would rev the car out.

i bought a new pump off ebay fse sytec £65 fitted it took it for a spin and it has done the same the cutting out has worsened over time.

my neighbour then gave me another pump which he removed from a car years ago that he said used to work so i fitted it and it went great for about 2 miles then i decided i would send her out of a junction sideways. the pump immediately cut out and went noisy.

i then decided to change the fuel pressure regulator with one i had on a spare engine the one that came off the car appeared to be rusty inside so now the car appears to drive ok if you drive easy but the pump is still noisy

it gets very noisy from inside the car its gets louder as you drive

when it cuts out it is only for a couple of seconds then it will pick up again.

i have only driven the car about 100 miles in total

any advice would be much appreciated

willy

Id say your problem is rust particles in the bottom of the tank, can you see how dirty it is by shining a torch through the hole the pump sits in? You will more than likely have to remove the tank to clean it out properly.

Does this car have an in tank low pressure pump, plus an external high pressure pump?
