Is the wiring the same for them, just a straight swap?

You mean the early non projector type lamps? The wiring is different for these.

well i've got the horrible piston adjustable ones at the moment and my lights are well low and a bit has broke on the main beam.....so i'm just going to swap a set of manual adjustable ones so it passes the mot and they might be non smiley ones depending on what i can get cheap....

OK, the wiring on the lamps as fitted to pre facelift cars is different to post facelift cars, so try and swop like for like, but the non smiley projectors will swop with smiley projectors....if you know what I mean!!

Honestly, the adjustment mechanism can be saved! The rod into the piston is threaded, you can use it to center the adjustment on the piston sleve. The clip that the ball end of the rod goes into can break, but is pence to replace. The whole unit can be disassembled too. You can build it up with smilies or non-smilies. You'll need some needle nosed pliars and a small screwdriver to open the clips.
Pre-facelift ones are completely different. They are easier to take apart.
