Tech 1 - Tech 2
Moderator: martauto
I'm confused by all the "Sports" for sale at the moment. My question is this:
If a car left the factory sporting a Tech 2 kit is there any way at all it would have left with a Tech 1 steering wheel?
The reason I ask is that so many cars for sale at the moment appear to have mix 'n' match specs...

Its the "model year" not the registration plate.
Early Tech2 cars definately had the Tech1 wheel - but depending when the car was built and registered yes some G reg cars would have had them - a car registered on 1st August '89 on a G reg could have been built much earlier in the Year.
Tech 2 wheels may have only become part of the Sport pack for the 1990 model Year - so Early 1990 ( Still a G reg ) onwards.
Only way to know for sure is to get a build spec from BMW - which will provide proof of whether it was or wasn't a Sport when it left the factory beyond any doubt.

BMW build specs will state exactly what parts were used when it was built (such as steering wheel/bodykit) and I realise it is the build date which is relevant but just wasn't sure whether there was actually a mixing of specifications...which it appears there was.

Brochure from '89 ( Which has a G reg car on the front ) shows the Sport as having a Tech 2 wheel. I think BMW just changed the design of the Sport steering wheel sometime in 1989 to the "Tech 2" style. Earlier tech 2 sports definately had the Tech 1 wheel though.

Fair enough. I just thought it was curious that they'd go to the trouble of putting Tech 2 kits on without putting the Tech 2 wheel in as well, seems unfinished or rushed to me but as my old boss used to say: "BMW always do things for a reason"
Who am I to judge...?

Oh I know. I'm not looking to buy a Sport nor does the one I own have a mix of Tech 1 and Tech 2 parts. I was just curious.polsta wrote:its only a steering wheel, and 20 years of owners...things can get damaged and swapped etc too
(Although I do believe it wouldn't be "only a steering wheel" if you were looking to buy one and the wheel in question was out of place...It would become a bargaining tool!)

Cool, it seems like the window is being narrowed. My car is a 04/90 build date and has a Tech 2 wheel.si911t wrote:My tec2 has a tec1 steering wheel its on a f plate - according to build sheet I got from cotswolds bmw , production date was 07/12/88

Or if you go on the Realoem BMW site and input the last 7 (?) digits of your VIN it will tell you the build month.nm1 wrote:sorry for being stupid where do you find the build date on your car, mines a H plate and always wondered when it was built
