when i corner left hard enough to put even a light suspension loading on, i get a whining noise.

could this be wheel bearings?

there's no noise while running straight or cornering right...

It does sound like a bearing

Try jacking the car up, grip the tyre top and bottom and see if theres any play in it.

The rear baerings on my E30 are totally shot, they make a right old row but there is no play in them as it passed its MOT a few weeks ago.

mine were also shot but no play. its also a guess as to what side has gone!

and of course i guessed wrong! mine made a rumble when going left (especially on motorway) so we guessed right bearing....our survey said AHHARR. nil point.

Do the bearing. I had the same problem in a Saxo. Passed the NCT/ MOT without any problems as they're was no play in the wheel but when I changed the bearing it cured the problem noise.

Whine was occuring while I was driving normally, it was a lot louder when turning to the left and eventually I was getting vibration through the clutch. Damaged it I think when I got a blow out... no other explanation for it that I can think of.
