Fecking m40 seams to suffer from a bit of clutch judder in "hot" traffic in central london.

I seam to remember this being a pretty common problem.

Do BMW know about this? Didn't they change the materials on some clutches?

Did they ever have a recal for this? winkeye winkeye

I ask this as i know the previous owner (who is the first owner)

If there was a recall do you think i could get it sorted maybe?

Can't be bothered to do it myself or payfor it especially when the whole m40 lot is going to be binned, would just be useful for now!

THANKS!

My old 87 m10 was fine in traffic apart from the clutch being heavy compared to this one! (but i built up muscles on my left leg...!)

It got bl@@dy dangerous the other day, when i was trying to push in front of someone, just wouldn't do what i wanted!

was it still m40 for the e36? or is it m44.

Has your cars always done it? or is it an age thing? Mines only got 62 000 on the clock which is pretty crap for a clutch

Andrew, which are the best clutches to get then, are ones from ECP/GSF oK? or are they going to mess up in a couple of hundred miles...

Also as i'm hoping for an engine change soon is it really worth it?!!

Get a Sachs one from ECP/GSF. Identical to the original, except where that is stamped Sachs-BMW the new one is just stamped Sachs.

Or just try changing the clutch fluid.
This is a very common problem ( I had it on my old 316i) and changing the fluid worked for me, it was due to the fluid heating up, IIRC they recalled it on an E36 model and changed the clutch fluid pipes to braided pipe.

Thanks Simon, I will try that this weekend.

Sounds about right, as it happens when i have been driving fast (i.e motorway) then go into traffic, so I would assume higher underbonnet temperatures.

I'll use some superblue or something with a higher boiling point, might help.

Can't be ar5ed to change the clutch on this

Simon you are a star!

Changed the fluid over to some ATE superblue and went and sat in some traffic on saturday (for a good few hours.... :x :x ) and it seams to have cured the problem!

I changed it in the dark so didn't really get a good look at the fluid but i think it was pretty cloudy :o

Makes me think i need to change the brake fluid as well....maybe this week sometime..

Thanks a lot!

Oh my girlfriend change my air filter in under 60 seconds, in the dark all i did was point to the airbox... Was the first bit a mechanical thing she has ever done to a car. She couldn't belive how easy it was...

Nice one Gwynley, glad it sorted it, clutch fluid is one of them things that get's overlooked all to often.

And the mechanically minded girlfriend is great, mine can do some pretty complicated tasks, and whenever I buy something electrical or flat packed, she always put's it together!

Off topic, I recall you working in London for the Government, is it for the Welsh part of it by any chance?

Pm sent Simon!

I think my girlfriend is pretty mechanically minded really as well, well she is a science teacher, but also is well into her deep sea diving and there is loads of technical stuff with that. Never puts flat pack furniture together mind...probably could though, if she could be bothered! Don't want her taking over though, i've got to have some use!

I think this is getting a little off topic...
