As I've said further up the thread, 15A might have been specified for early injection stuff which has two pumps, although my own two pump E30 definitely has a 7.5a fuse in it, which has never given trouble.
7.5A is correct for all single pump models, whatever the ETM may say.

So can you explain why so many have the supposedly wrong fuse?

This includes very unmolested low mileage cars which have never had fuel pump issues?

Surely it cant be a coincidence?

This goes to show Brian's commitment to the E30 marque, that he shows such concern over other Zoner's cars fuse ratings!

I think he'd make a good Pebble Beach concours judge.

Change your tech 1 back to a 15 amp fuse as it will have 2 pumps.

The E34 520i and 525i 12v - with a single fuel pump - also have a 15 amp fuse. The pump is basically an E30 type in a plastic cradle.
I've had fuel pump failure (seizure) on these E34 pumps as well. The car will start but only run very briefly before stalling - the fuse doesn't blow. Am I right then in saying that the fuel pump relay - if overloaded - will just break the circuit between terminals 30 (12v from battery) and 87 (power to pump) ?

Fuel pump relay doesn't act as a fuse in any way, but as soon as the engine stops turning there's no crank sensor pulses to the ECU, so it switches off the relay, and kills the power to the overloaded wire before damage can be done.

So pump seizes, engine stops and power is cut to the fused wire - as I thought. As I said, I've had two E34's with seized pumps andb they haven't blown a fuse.
But, there is a first for everything.

Could be worse - could have a Hillman Imp which has no fuses at all. How did they get away with that?! 8O

This is the statement that the head goon and the rest of his show fail to understand. No use trying to explain it to them as they are essentially spare parts fitters, whose diagnostic abilities are limited to plugging the car into a computer and waiting for it to tell them what to do next.

Assumed that fuses would be checked as part of Inspection 2 but appears not (click here)

If a component fails it is surely imperative the circuit breaks as soon as possible in line with the specs contained within that car's handbook. If 15amp is not sufficient to break the circuit then this is a flaw in design, however as the ECU signal is cut (by no crank sensor input) it essentially negates the problem. Right? If the handbook or the BMW tech manual put owners in danger it would have been replaced or modified appropriately.

So where LPG is used the issue of fuel pump fuse not cutting out due to seized rotor is a big problem.

Why do many have a 15amp fuse? Well, Barry says 2 fuel pumps = 15amp. The service manuals also rate 15amp.

Taking the 325 prefacelift & facelift as example, strictly referring to the owners handbook - Is it the case that two fuel pumps is always 15amp and single pump always 7.5?

Also, I struggle to work out why we all have to argue the toss rather than break down the problem. Too often not enough effort is put into research and as such in the heat of the moment the wrong things are said.

Let's get things in line on this thread please - to all.

This needs locked up for two reasons.

1) It's getting personal
2) Facts are that in 20 years few if any E30s have caught fire due to this issue.

I support Brian's desire to keep us all from turning into toast but agree that it could've been better thought out.

Wanted to get this on track but a couple of posts went up during my first effort into this thread.

I don't like it, have thought about dedicating decent time to helping it along but cant see this thread getting any better.

Mods, we need a few words please.

Locked for now :o
