which thermostat

Hi all,
i've been reading various thoughts on which degree thermostat to run for an m52 conversion.
which degree and engine model etc is suitable?
also if we get a specific answer can we add it to the conversion list at the start of the thread for others?

i've just ordered an 80degree for for mine and i'll be using the e36 rad and 318ti fan temp switch.

i've seen a few differing opinions but from what i've seen its the most popular and if it runs a tad cold then i'll change for an 88

when you say the 80 degree output, you mean an 80 degree thermostat i take it?

so i make up a small wiring loom for the electric fan with a fused power line from the fusebox, (a blank slot), run it to the thermostatically controlled switch and have that powering the fan then down to earth.
then pop an 80 degree thermostat in which i get from ecp/bmw/gsf etc to fit an m52 motor. are all the thermostats the same size then, i.e. is the thermostat from another engine in the range or is it an option for the m52?

with regards to the stat boys, im running an 88 degree stat in my m52 and as willnz said a ti thermo switch (80-88 degree), it sits consistantly on halfway and the only time it moves is if im sat in heavy traffic, it rises to just above halfway and the fan cuts in and goes straight back down to halfway.

took a bit of faith when testing the fan for the first time

but now i have no worries

from half on the temp guage to even 3 quarters is only a few degrees difference although it looks a lot

oh btw kev the stat im using is the one i originaly had in my m50, it was only in the car for 5000 miles so i re-used it rather than un nessesarely buying a new one! no issues to report mate

ive just ordered an 80 dergree one and quite alot of the bmw range use an 80, think mine was listed for an e30
