If I have a G reg 325 auto, should it be switchable auto? or normal? How can you test if the internals are running fine?

Not sure if switchables were standard on the basic 325 certainly were on the Sport and the SE. If the gears change smoothly without any delay and the gearbox fluid is a nice clean and pink/red colour the box should be OK.
There is a changeable filter accessible from the inspection panel at bottom of box (under car). Always good maintenance to change them when needed. The box will start to screech/howl if it does.
Regular ATF checks and fluid changes are the key to autobox longevity.

Do you have the switchable knob on the centre consul to the right of the gear shift. It can be turned to three positions E for Economy, S for Sport and 3-2-1 which holds gears for icy conditions. If you haven't got this, yours is standard. The standard ones are pretty bullet proof (I did 230,000 on one) but the switchables can need replacing earlier.

Sorry, don't know for sure. Just did a build check on my own Sport and the list states auto but not which type. Hopefully somebody else will know.
