right i got one for u experts out there lol
im kinda new to the e30 and have got 91 316i lux AUTO lol

i know you do a auto to manual convertion pretty easily so thought instead of just converting the box i will change the engine at the same time

my friend has offered me a 325i engine and box for cheap for a 85 e30

i am wondering a few things
1. will it go in
2. will my prop shaft and diff work with it
3. does it have a fan becuase it is a 6pot engine n takes up most of the engine bay
4. does all the water pipes go straight onto that engine

i know i will need the pedal cluster, the gear shifter and the links between them basically

but as i said i am fairly knew and thought i should obv ask you guys about it first

thanks a lot , any help is appriciated

1/ Yes
2/ Prop, no. Diff, will connect up, but is a hopeless ratio and not as strong as the correct diff.
3/ Same fan as the 316.
4/ You need all the engine, including AFM, radiator, header tank, wiring loom, ECU, etc.

You will need to add a bracket for the coolant header tank, modify the air filter mount for the 325 type, and add a bracket for the clutch fluid reservoir.

An '85 E30 325 engine will be a high compression one (good), fitted with a primitive management system (bad). It would be a good idea to update it to the later Motronic M1.3 system from a post '87 320 or 325 before fitting it.

1/good
2/alright then so prop from a 325i and will change diff at later date
3/ but the fan in mine is huge lol
4/ whats the afm ? and header tank?

is the coolant header tank the big bowl u put the water in basically?
if i put a k&N on then wont need air filter mount ?
thought the cltuch fluid tank would be on the engine already ?

whats a primitive managemnt system?

thanks a lot, i no im new to it really n sound like a bit of a drip lol

2/ It'll rev its nuts off at any decent speed, and fuel consumption will be horific.
3/ Same fan
4/ AFM = air flow meter - the bit that sits on top of the air filter box. Coolant tank is where you put the water in. Combined with the rad. on four cylinder E30s, but separate on the sixes.
The matching one for your 325i engine will sit on the RH inner wing, but can be converted to suit the much more readily available facelift header tank, which sits on the LH inner wing, by replacing the water pump.
K&N filter is a well proven method of losing power!
Clutch tank sits on the body (welded to the RH suspension turret on RH drive manual cars only). Won't be fitted to an auto.
Management system is the ECU that controls engine fuelling and sparks. Computer technology moved on a long way between pre and post facelift E30s.
Before fitting the 325 engine you should change the sump gasket, unless you know it's had a recent one. Easy to change out of the car, but a pig of a job to do in situ.

goliath, you need to do a bit of reading up in the engine swaps section of the forum mate. I have a 325i manual prop here for sale if you are interested send me a PM and we can sort something out 8)
How do you pronounce 'either'? I say 'either', but some say 'either'. Either is correct.

Two types of auto gearbox fitted to E30's - 'ordinary' and electronic. The latter is distinguished by a rotary knob fitted to the top front of the handbrake console.
The 'ordinary' system has no electronics at all, and the engine and main body loom are identical to that of a manual.
The electronic version of the auto uses a separate loom for the electronics, so the body loom is the same. The engine, however, uses a different throttle position switch/sensor which has more pins and a different plug from the version on manual and ordinary auto engines, so if you use an engine with either TPS, you have to use the engine loom that matches it, or change the plug to suit.
