no parking lights do not equal side lights!!!! parking lights come on when you park and switch them on with the indicator stalk as only the one side (and rear light) will come on depending on which way you indicate, side lights both come on along with interior dash lights, license plate etc.. and are switched by the light switch. Looking at the Bentley the parking lights are powered from the indicator circuit, not fuse 22 and 23.

so e30bb do you mean your parking lights come on (switched by the indicator) and you side lights switched by the light switch do not come on??? if so most likely to be a dodgy light switch.

sorry brian, maybe someone bought you all the beers (myself included)they owed you last night !!!!

What mrLee30 says is quite correct, but in my experience most people don't even know that function exists.
Re reading the OP though, I'm not at all convinced that this is what he means, since he's talking about headlamps working without the parling lamps.
We will await further details from e30bb.[size

sorry brian!!!! didn't mean to question E30 knowledge!! especially electrical, anyone who would know there are two connections on the door switch one for lights and one for electric windows (the first problem you solved for me!!) has clearly spent too much time dissecting these cars!! much to the zone benefit!!

what i think he (e30bb) means is he has seen an E30 with the dipped headlight option (head light dimmed through the resistor) and his only has the small lights at the top. so he is thinking something is wrong!! to clarify e30bb some E30 have only the small bulb at the top of the light, that is your side lights, some have a dipped headlight where the headlight is dim they are also sidelights, if this is not the case you have confused me! maybe....possibly....who knows!

But parking lights only come on with the ignition switched off!

Parking lights come on when you push the indicator on (but beyond where the inidicator normally comes on) and the ignition is switched off, and depending which side inthe indicator switch is engaged the lights for that side will come on.

Maybe this will help

Sidelights 1st position on switch, these lights are also parking lights, but will only illuminate a side at a time with ignition off, depending on position of indicator stalk

Image

Sidelights with dim-dip function, only fitted to early facelift E30's, also 1st position on switch (ignore the chav foglights!) Sorry Richy couldn't resist!

Image

Dipped beam 2nd position on switch

you cannot drive along with your parking lights on as if you did your indicator would be on. your car will look like either the first or second picture on simons post, if any lights come on with the switch in first position then they are your side lights... it should be clear

if no lights come on in first position then...
1. check the bulbs
2. change the light switch

if not that then wiring, but as left and right are independant circuits and run off different fuses (22,23) that is unlikely. the common denominator is the light switch.

get to a scrappie and swap it. if that doesn't work.....live with it!!

The dim dip resistor is located on the inner wing next to the N/S headlight, you can get to it by removing the N/S headlight grill.

I still can't work out what the OP reckons is wrong with his lights.
Is it the dim dip function that he means?

I think i have the solution!!!

His sidelights could be broken as the symtoms are similar to when one of the seven hydroplexilators have come off of the slipspline, E30bb you will have to get under the car and remove the exhaust rotator to find it (on the off side) when you find them look for the third one from the frontside(that controls the sidelight slone) if it is loose and off the slipspline just WIND em UP. that aught to cure it!
