Hi everyone, I'm new here and would really appreciate some expert advice! I've had my 1985 320i for nearly 3 years and love it to death, but it's really p*ssing me off at the mo.
If I use my car regularly (at least once a day for a decentish run to work and back) it runs fine, no real problems...however, if I use it then leave it to sit for 24 hours or so, it starts ok but runs really roughly for a good 10-15 mins. It idles unevenly, with the revs dropping to the point where it just about stalls but doesn't quite, and when accelerating it "holds back" before suddenly jerking back into action, and continues to do this for some time. It also seems to be making a "grumbling" sort of noise when idling. The only way to sort it out seems to be taking if for a blast up a straight road where I can put my foot down for 5 mins or so, and it then gradually returns to normal. Another symptom is if I turn the engine off while the car is going through one of it's dodgy periods it is really difficult to start again...it sometimes backfires, which has caused exhaust problems.
I had a new rotor arm last year so I can't see this being the problem.
To top it all off, I've just been to try and start it after it's been sat for about 48 hours, and it won't start at all! It's turning over but doesn't seem to want to fire...
Anyhelp would be MUCH appreciated!
Cheers
Steve
